Anyone still alive in this thred?
I'm still sitting with the problem as above, but at least Telkom is working on it at the exchange.
Something else, anyone in the PVR / Rietvallei park / Elardus park areas using uncapped LTE from Telkom? I'm trying to find out how the service performs in the area. Reading on the forum some areas are fine and others have endless speed issues.

I can comment on LTE uncapped. I live close to van Deventer road in PvR to give you an idea on location. I accidentally severed my phone line while cutting down a tree in my garden last year and not wanting to go through the schlep of having to try and convince Telkom to come sort it out I cancelled my ADSL and opted for LTE uncapped instead. That was one happy accident.

I've been on LTE uncapped since last year November and even though uptake on the product has drastically increased in our area I'm still very happy with my speed and stability. The lowest my speed drops is 15 Mbps as far as I'm aware. I use it mainly for streaming and can comfortably stream 1080p TV episodes. Higher quality Youtube videos also don't seem to be a problem but there's no point on my current TV.

I download the occasional torrent and it flies but beware that after your download 50GB's worth of torrents in the month any further torrenting activity is severely throttled (maxes out at about 10Kpbs). This is according to what I recall, I've only hit the 50GB limit once and that was a while ago.

The greatest thing about LTE uncapped in my opinion is that allows multiple activities at once. I can stream a Supersport rugby game on my phone while my wife watches a show on TV. It's really great from that perspective. I've even played a few rounds of Heroes of the Storm while my wife was streaming.

Hope all of the above makes sense, had to type it up pretty quickly.

So there's no slowing down to a crawl during peak times or total dropouts? I can definatly do with slow downs to 15 or even 10 MB and I don't torrent, well maybe something here and there but I won't even come close to the 50 GB FUP per month. I'm in Rietvallei park other side of the R21 highway in Escombe ave. My ADSL is on the PVR exchange, I wonder what LTE tower I'll connect to.

In all my time using it I can remember it slowing down significantly only twice. Both times were on Friday evenings and it couldn't have lasted more than two or three hours. Any other occasions a simple reset of the router sorted out any issues.

Regarding towers, you aren't locked despite what Telkom claim. I've taken my router to two friends who wanted to test the service before ordering. You also get a Poynting attenae when ordering uncapped and it's usually worthwhile spending an hour or two on the roof experimenting with direction. If you're interested I suggest you either invite a friend with LTE (capped or uncapped) over to test or go ahead and order but make sure you cancel within seven days if you're unhappy.

Love your signature :D

In Melville Ave, people seem to be digging. I don't know what it's for. I do hope it's Telkom or someone with open access (if its Fibre)

There was talk on the PvR Facebook group about possible fibre rollout this year but the issue always seems to fizzle out around the amount of interest. The owner of Delitech (http://www.delitech.co.za/) located in the Pierre van Ryneveld Lifestyle Centre seems to have the best info on possible timelines, sounds like he's well connected to the movers and players interested in rolling out in the area. The guy's name is Dewald if memory serves. Might be a good idea to have a chat with him.

For now, lots of uncapped ADSL options available without a contract, I use a capped Afrihost account but can also get a uncapped one if I choose, no contracts.

Frustrating week, would watch a movie with no problem and then next movie stops every 10 minutes as the signal is lost. Regained within a minute but the break is long enough to have to restart the movie in exodus :-(

Where in PvR? Make sure you are not in a dead zone vir LTE and Wireless - I am, but my ADSL is reliable enough. Just can't get more than 4Mbps though. But there are people with 10/20Mbps.

Depends what you want I guess.

My copper length to the exchange was approx 750m (500 odd meters as the crow flies), and I had a rock solid 20Mbps VDSL2 sync. Overall the experience was positive.

The exchange is at 3 Typhoon str.

Kirkness nearest corner is Kirkness and Hugo in the Complexes there.

I'm about 1.32 km from the exchange as the crow flies.

I'm looking at a stable 4mbps line that I can do some streaming and general internet.

That's close to me, but you are a bit higher up than me, might be able to get wireless and lte coverage.

You'll be fine with ADSL if you are looking for 4 MB. Personally I always had a very solid 4 MB line but I've been having endless issues with ASSIA since wanting to go faster around 2 months ago. To be honest I'm gatvol of Telkom ADSL because of ASSIA, If I could still get the uncapped LTE deal for R599 pm I'd go for it, but R799 for LTE is a bit ritch for my blood at this stage.

Stay away from LTE (for the time being at least). Speed has drastically degraded this past week.

Apologies for the thread necromancy but this is probably still the best thread in which to discuss internet options in Pierre van Ryneveld. Has anyone heard any whispers about fibre yet? Hoping this is our year

This afternoon they were laying fibre cable in Mustang Ave.

The fibre connection outside the centre where Spar is, was already there last year. They are just waiting for Telkom to come and connect it....

Thanks. Any idea who's doing the trenching in Mustang? I see that Dark Fibre has quite a bit of cable layed all over PvR already according to their map. I live very close to the cable running down Hetzog. Anyone know how exactly last mile connections work? Could it run through a neighbour's yard to my house?

Martin,

It is Telkom.

The fibre cables will run from the main connection box situated near the Engen garage into the suburb. The transmission poles will be on the roadside and the last mile connection to home is wireless.
