Martin,

It is Telkom.

The fibre cables will run from the main connection box situated near the Engen garage into the suburb. The transmission poles will be on the roadside and the last mile connection to home is wireless.

Thanks. So is Telkom providing the last mile wireless connection you mention too? And is this only available in Mustang?

... and the last mile connection to home is wireless.

Arg ... I'd rather stay with copper if that is the case.
If I order fibre there better be a piece of glass terminating into my router.
Wireless just invites problems (signal loss, interference, etc.)

Reposting this here from the Pierre van Ryneveld Community Facebook page in case anyone is interested. I haven't made use of Nethost Solutions myself so this is in no way an endorsement but they seem to have a solid reputation based on community feedback.

We're running the first phase of our broadband project in Pierre van Ryneveld. We'd love for all of you to get on board. If you live within 1km radius of the PvR centre, please join. The more the merrier. Contact me on dewald@delitech.co.za if you need more info. NB: Before you ask, I am NOT AT (LEGAL) LIBERTY to disclose the underlying brand new technology at this time. What I CAN tell you is: (1) This is NOT the same (typical) wireless technology that everyone's posting on Facebook. (2) High speeds up to 100mbps, uncapped, unshaped (we'll deal with abuse). Pricing starts at R1599 for the first signups, may change after 30 April. (3) This literally brings fibre speeds TO your home/business. Line of sight is important, but we have strategies in place if you're at a dead/underperforming spot. 12 month initial contract, month to month, R2590 install fee (once off) (own router) or R3090 (incl router). Join the digital revolution PvR. [Edited for clarity; updated with latest information; shorter;].

Eagerly awaiting the site survey, really hoping it will work in my location. This is a question for people planning to game on this connection: latency is obviously great in general on fibre. Any indication on how much extra latency the wireless last mile will add to ping times?

Due to the nature of the underlying wireless technology, we hope to see low ping times. US assessments show 3-10ms in desert areas - which of course is a bit different from our urban situation with trees, buildings, etc. Our local assessments reveal 10-30ms local depending on configuration/conditions. We will also limit the number of signups to prevent crowding. We'll be working to tweak and optimise to ensure great gaming and streaming. We are venturing boldly into this project with our partners after three years of researching and finally choosing our partners for PvR, because we trust the technology. [Updated]

Sounds really promising

Someone mentioned the cable around the centre - DFA cable. Nothing do to with Telkom. It's been commissioned for FTTB only - no home connectivity at all.

We will be combining DFA and OpenServe (+- 900m away down Van Ryneveld Ave) into a single access point at the centre. If the combination is not approved, we will work entirely with the OpenServe cable.

[Update: As of 25 March, we will only be utilising the DFA line].

Would love to hear your thoughts on this: https://mybroadband.co.za/news/broa...dable-broadband-anywhere-in-south-africa.html

Our thoughts? We're excited! Several ISPs are investing in new wireless technologies. The wireless arena is changing for the better and may well outperform other technologies in a few years. We're actively working to bring our offering to PvR, and we hope our community supports the initiative. We've been reading on the community FB pages how people desire fibre - well, here's an opportunity to get as close to fibre as possible, without the 2 year+ wait (we've been trying to bring actual fibre into PvR, but it's simply not economical, and several people are very vocal about how they all want it, but they don't want to (1) wait for it (2) pay for it). The PvR project is Open Access, so other ISPs will have access to the local infrastructure, with their own requirements/specs/pricing. It's all about choice, ultimately. That's why it's vital PvR residents DO NOT sign up to "exclusive networks" or "exclusive ISPs" in the area! We don't want another monopoly to take hold!

Hi martin

Sorry, no. I thought I had a good idea of tower locations but countless trips up my roof to try and adjust the LTE antenna for better signal have proved fruitless. A 360 degree sweep has not provided any meaninful results. I currently have my antenna disconnected because I now get slightly better signal without it so I'm at a complete loss.

Thanks, will try it out from my side, currently the internal antennas are jumping between 1-3 bars, mostly on two.

As far as I know there are only 3 possible locations to aim at - the tower in Typhoon street facing Irene Village Mall, the tower behind the Spar in Fouche street and the tower at the end of Herzog Rd behind the pub...

Looks like I'm bang in the middle of those 2 towers. Thanks guys, hopefully I'll have some time to play around tomorrow.
