I want to piggy bag off a family members router in order to use the internet. The router would be 120 meters away line of sight and have to be mounted on the roofs of both points.

Can anybody recommend a cheap solution?

FTP Ethernet cabling costs about R8 per meter, from a bulk supplier.
Don't forget to measure properly and have the end connectors crimped into place and tested in front of your eyes before you pay for the cable, and, don't bend the cable too much.

The best and easiest wireless solution is going to be NanoStations. Call Wirecom in pretoria or someone in your area that can supply them. They cost about R 500 bucks each and you will need 2. They are very easy to setup and with only 120m to bridge you will easily get 180Mbps between the two.

Just google NanoStation M2 Loco for more info.
Or contact wirecom (google it)

Cheers

The distance exceeds practical maximum cat5 cable length. Fixed cabling might not be an option, we need more details before a decent solution can be offered.

+1 on the NanoStation, has been mentioned a few times here before. http://www.scoopdistribution.co.za/product_info.php?cPath=101_75&products_id=1029
There is also a 5GHz version at a higher price.

Nope, the distance exceeds practical maximum cat5 OPTIMAL performance length.
It will degrade to about 10MB/s over that distance, more than enough for a MAX 10MB internet connection.

+1 Nano stations the best way to do it ... +- R 500 for 2.4 Ghz ... +- R 1000 for 5.8 Ghz each.

FYI ... MAX distance for CAT 5E between hubs/switches is 100m

Yes it will degrade, but we have no idea to what point or if it will even be an option at all.
