Johannesburg - The use of after-market and second-hand parts to repair cars insured by short-term insurers is allowed if it does not compromise safety, the Short-term Insurance Ombudsman said on Friday.

"There is a perception on the part of the public that an insurer is obliged, when repairing a motor vehicle, to use new original factory supplied parts in all instances," Martin said in a statement.

The use of second-hand parts, where appropriate, was also to be encouraged as a cost saving measure, he added.

I agree with him, nothing wrong with using some non OEM parts....

You kidding me right? Say you get in accident in your PGTI and these dudes decide its okay to use non VW components? You have paying the insurance for getting your car back to its original state, not what they think its appropriate given their budget.

And we need to separate this from people who add non OEM kits/mods on their cars.

Especially if im not paying for it!

But then again, if I had a 1.6 and told the insurance I want a specific bumper and mags then they should do it, only if the owners requests!

Most components in cars are not made by say VW, Toyota etc., they buy the parts from other companies.

Why must I pay 4x the price for a set of spark plugs when I can get them from the OEM manufacturer NGK etc for a 1/4 of the price. Car dealers will fleece you dry when it comes to parts. Your VW oil, air & petrol filters are most likely made by GUD, electricks made by Bosch, why pay VW markup prices for the same stuff?

This whole genuine parts thing is a load of bollocks. Granted there are some bad replacements out there but if you stick with well known brands you are fine.

If my warranty allows it and if I am quoted for the after-market component, then it's sort of OK.

It's only OK if the entire job is backed by a life-time warranty and guarantee that in essence, guarantee's that these parts have the exact same life and wear characteristics as their brand new OEM ones.

So, as soon as the ombudsman forces the enactment of the above guarantee, then it's acceptable.

A related issue is the quality of the locally manufactured item. I fly. The manual for the plane specified Bosch sparkplugs (this is something you **don’t** want to fail in the air). They were probably fine in Europe. In SA, the locally manufactured Bosch plugs were crap. NGK was much better. I used them instead.

Then two months down the line the part fails and you have to replace it yourself?

If you sign off an insurance claim then that fine print states normally that no further claims will be allowed/lodged against that same claim/incident. Not?

I'm not entirely sure how the Ombudsman can allow this because the police constantly pull cars over for being modified, their story is usually along the lines of: it's not SABS approved, I highly doubt these "pirate" parts are SABS approved, if challenged in court I'm not so sure this will fly.
