A great friend of my g/f wants to come over and visit for 3 weeks (5 days in Cape Town on the Blue Train) and the rest up in Gauteng with us.

He has asked her to plan the whole trip for him, so we are looking at things that he would enjoy.

1) He wants to go on a hot air balloon ride (will start googling around for that) any recommendations?

Places we'll take him
1) Lion Park & Carnivores Restaurant
2) Pilanes Game Reserve & Sun City
3) Louire Zoo in Midrand
4) Godfathers in Centurion for their Beef Ribs
5) Moyo's at the Zoo Lake for some african style food
6) A friend mentioned a restaurant that does potjiekos, will take him there
7) Gods Window in Mpumalanga
8) Looking at him getting a tour of Soweto or one of the townships
9) A game farm stay (with night drive)

We'll also have a couple of braai's with my parents and friends etc so he can experience the greatness of properly cooked food :)

Thinking of a place that makes "ouma kos" but haven't really found one (Dros comes to mind)

So any thoughts / suggestions / comments on the above?

Luckily for him, money isn't a problem :)

 @ godfathers

was in their kitchen once, never ate there afterwards.

Excellent idea, the God's Window in Mpuma - do take a detour via Dullstroom and Lydenburg as well ;)

Hot air ballooning = Bil Harrop's
Traditional South African cuisine = Gramadoelas in Newtown

The Shabeen in Soweto or A Shabeen in Soweto?

A Shabeen.

A friend at work took me to one, was sitting on crates outside under a tree :D
That was the best drinking place I have ever been at. You have no idea how friendly the people there are.

How good a friend of your g/f is he really?

Haha, i've asked that question before ;)

He's 60 something now, she used to be his childs nanny in ireland, a real father figure to her, gave us great financial advice which is really starting to pay off.

A good Irishman needs beer. Eastwood's in Pretoria (near Loftus) used to have Guinness on tap. My ex-BiL, an Irishman, loved that more than anything in SA.

If you do go to God's Window, 21km from Lydenburg is a guest house called Hop's Hollow. Good stop off point as they make very good beer too. My pics.

The two places I would add to the list is the Apartheid Museum next to Gold Reef City (www.apartheidmuseum.org) and Maropeng at the cradle of humankind (www.maropeng.co.za) all the visitors that I have heard from have raved about them.

Especially Maropeng, I would make it a must see. Aparently the resturant there is awesome as well.
