Plan for cheaper, faster broadband SA: Alan Knott-Craig

A single wholesaler will just result in another monopoly (one controlled by ICASA!).

I dont believe anything these fat cats have to say. They always have ulterior motives.

What about commenting on current network issues

Knott-Craig said that South Africa needs to get ready to take advantage of LTE Advanced (4G) when the technology becomes commercially available.

Lol, didn't they advertise they had 4G? Then Vodacom or someone complained at ASA?

Telkom Mobile is here already :) Government will finance SOC instead of the public sector. They have more than enough capacity, stable, reliable, always working without any hiccups...

A single wholesaler will result in a Telkom scenario....and we all know how efficient and cheap they are.

Marketing strategy, Cell C seem to be doing a great job about it, ;)

Cheaper to vodacom... Still R2/mb OOB :p

He was a key player and sang a different tune when he was at Vodacom building their network, now he says this?
Do something about it Mr Alan, build the network for the all the SPs and new players to use.

I think it's a brilliant idea, if properly managed. The Australian government, together with Emerson (they are providing technical support) is doing just that. They plan to cover the entire Australian continent with broadband capability. How about it South Africa?

I have this gut feeling that it is all about survival. Things just get left up in the air without any explanation. Not even the account webpage gets fixed. Is there no money?

Oh hell no. We've done the one monopoly thing already. Been there, got the shirt, paid a fortune to Telkom. No thanks.

As much diversity as possible please...

The lower input costs and increased competition will ensure that consumers will get the best service levels at the lowest possible price, said Knott-Craig.
Bullsht. That is not how the market works.

Lower input costs and 1 provider means the provider pockets the savings. There is no incentive to pass on the savings because there is no competition.

Well instead of every Tom, Dick and Harry building their own network it does make sense that a combined consortium build one TOGETHER. If you compare it to what Seacom (and the rest) did for Int. Bandwidth, it is not a new idea at all. It's essentially an "independent" provider consisting of investors, which would include the major SP's, Government, Private and the list goes on...
It will mean a consistent leading edge network, rolled out in a fraction of the time. EVERYBODY wins...........
