whose "good principle" the ANC?
or their fat-cat backers, who want to tax grass and toasters,
because they can and know they will get reelected no matter what they do.

also, elections a LOOOOONG time away, steal galore,
just before elections, providing there is even a SA then they will get rid of all these stealth taxes.

No Kate it is not a good idea. the fact that the SABC (terrestrial signal) is trying to gather license fees by users for a spectrum they do not even control (Fibre and ADSL) is ridiculous and insane. If the SABC wants to stay relevant they need to up their game and make their platforms worth watching (which will garnish viewers and advertisers alike) and increase in revenue. TV licenses should be seen as cream of the crop for people using the service.

The other silver bullet is this nugget of information

“The TV licence fee is outdated but the need for a publicly funded SABC remains. Bottom line, the vast majority of our people rely on the SABC for their news and information.”

“If you underfund the SABC you underfund democracy because you underfund the ability to hold power accountable and help citizens to make informed choices at the ballot box.”

Through your friends tweet (of which you agree) it claims the vast majority of our people rely on the SABC however the license fee collections are down. So instead of going after the non payers of the "vast majority of users" you would rather try and skin the people that have left the terrestrial viewing for online streaming services.

Its mind boggling that people can be this stupid

Please rather just get the traffic department to issue me with a fine instead of paying for a license to watch Netflix. I'd feel better about that.

This is the mistake many make, thinking they are stupid.

In a government of criminals, this is good thinking, extort every little bit you can for as long as you can, from those who can and will pay.
