Plan to revive money pit power stations in Pretoria

City of Tshwane mayor Nasiphi Moya delivered her first State of the City Address on Thursday, 10 April 2025, revealing the metro's plans to revive the decommissioned Pretoria West and Rooiwal power stations.

Moya said the plan is to convert the Pretoria West power station to a waste-to-energy plant and to resuscitate the Rooiwal power station.

I went down the rabbit hole. WTF was going at those two power stations?

'We have been doing nothing for 10 years': Idle Tshwane power stations cost the City billions

I cannot copy-paste from the article, but the summary is -

The two power stations have been non-operational for over a decade but as much as R1 billion has been spent on maintaining them and employing staff. Staff questioned on a condition of anonymity said they have been coming to work for over 10-years, and outside of occasional maintenance, they have stood around and done nothing, clocking in and out and receiving full pay.

This while the country was experiencing the worst of loadshedding.

If anyone cares there is a very lengthy report that was tabled to council sometime ago, bureaucracy in the city is unbelievable. This is something that should have been done ages ago.

Yeah I can imagine

Who is using the power? 80% of South Africa's industry is leaving the country, who is using the power?

I think Eskom are keeping pace with the downhill

"South Africa Power Consumption
Electricity consumption decreased by 4% to 195 TWh in 2023, which is in line with the downward trend observed since 2018 (-2.5%/year). It remained stable between 2005 and 2018, fluctuating between 206 and 221 TWh
."

Not sure about 2024 & 2025, maybe a trend here but not entirely clear, no big production improvements it seems.

"Electricity Production in South Africa is expected to be 18500.00 Gigawatt-hour by the end of this quarter, according to Trading Economics global macro models and analysts expectations. In the long-term, the South Africa Electricity Production is projected to trend around 19200.00 Gigawatt-hour in 2026 and 19700.00 Gigawatt-hour in 2027, according to our econometric models."
