The blueray drive on the ps3 died.

Its an old 60 gig that has ps2 capabilities, so its not really worth paying a grand to get the drive replaced. I am going to buy the new ps3 when I see a krismis special I like, but my idea is keep this one for the kids to play Skylanders on.
I have spent about and hour searching for information on this and its nuts to say the least. Its currently on 4.25, can someone point me to a trusted way to JB this so I can play games off an external?

Or maybe point me in the direction of someone in CT that can do this for a reasonable price. If I could get the drive replaced that would obviously be first prize, but its not worth it for R950.

Any advice?

What you're talking about is piracy. If such a method was easy to achieve, what's to stop people from lending or renting games and ripping ISO's of them to an external?

Search for downloadable games on PSN and see what might interest your kids. Skylanders might be there.

Your system needs to be on version 3.55 or below to load custom firmware to play it off of the hard drive, even with the new CFW 4.30 that was released it still needs an exploitable console to install it from, so your out of luck in that regard.

You can downgrade the console to 3.55 but 60gig consoles use 2x Nands to store the current firmware, so you need a hardware flasher, thats gonna cost you more than just replacing the laser anyway, even if you find some one that will do it for you they will probably charge you more than a R1000

Even if you do all of the above, the console still needs a functional drive to play all the games from the HDD as you need to keep one original game in the drive at all time, els 80% of the games dont work.

You can buy a replacement laser off of Dealextreme for less than R300 if your willing to wait 4 weeks for shipping.

As for piracy, legally your allowed one working backup on a different medium of any piece of software you own(back from the floppy days when the original medium could decay), and I am sure the op has the correct morals to only play the games he owns, but at the moment can not due to his drive being faulty.
