Playstation 2 Question

Hi all,

My apologies if this has been asked, but "PS2" as a search term is too short for the forums!

Is it worthwhile buying a PS2 now? I see everyone has sales on the go at the moment - I suppose in preparation for the PS3.

Or what is the recommendation for "TV Games?" Is an XBox even remotely worth it? Where does one get games for it?

I tried doing some research on the web, but got a bit muddled - everyone talks about reviewing PS2 games, but not really talking about getting the unit itself anymore.

Would really appreciate some insight before committing a credit card to it ;-)

Depends on yor needs, The PS2 is a great family console, it's cheap and there's tons of really good games for purchase or rent. So if it's something for your kids, or just something to tie you over till next gen arrives it's great.

Having said that, if it's next gen you want, ie the latest and greatest games, and you don't want to spend ~R2000 in the short term, you can get the XBox 360 from Prophecy for ~R4000 (say R6000 after an extra acontroller and some games) Or wait till ~November for the Wii or PS3.

While it's a contentious issue I don't recommend the PS3. It's going to be extremely expensive ~R6000 just for the box, unavailable in ZA till late 2007 and no more powerful (for games) than the 360, which is available now.

/semi-OT....I've stopped using the forums search for the same reason (i.e. PVR, UTD, etc) I use google to search the current site. Also not limited to 500 results then, especially when you searching for some old stuff

like Doobi said, it all depends on your budget but you cant go wrong with the PS2 now.

you can buy that and the 10 top games for less than R3k if you look around.

Yeah, me too. If I don't chew my arm off in anticipation. ;)

@Saintm - check out the Wii - Due late October/early November ~$250 (~R2000-2500) And just a different beast all together.

and my Fav, the size comparisons:

What concerns me more is trying to get Wii information out of Nintendo ZA (Panasonic) they seem totally disinterested in pushing the platform. They can't even give me local release details on the DS lite!

As Luke7777 suggested use Google - enter
HTML:
site:www.mybroadband.co.za PS2
into Google's search.

I'm waiting for the Wii though I havent yet ruled out the Xbox360. PS3? No way.

My thoughts are that with all the cheapening PS2 games that you should rather wait and buy the ps3 when it comes out cos then you can play all of the ps1, ps2 and ps3 games on it

Looking at the costs, it does seem like the PS2 is not a bad idea. Will be going out later today to have a look at some prices - I see Hi-Fi Corporation seems to have some nice extras too.

Thanks for all the advice! Much appreciated.

BTW, are here any extras that I will need to get while I am at it? I want to get two wireless controllers as extras for now, but I see they have memory cards and things extra. Do I need it?

Thank you!!

Definitely get a memory card - you'll regret it if you dont have at least one.

@Saintm - does your TV have component inputs? (note component and NOT composite ) :p

if so you can get a component cable for your PS2 and enjoy some games at a higher resolution other than the usual VGA res. ;)

BlueCollar, yeah it was a bit of a tough choice. My main motivation was the number of games available for the PS2 and the more important one - I WANTED ONE NOW! :-D

Not my main set - it is an older Samsung. But I will keep that in mind for the next set!

Good one lad. My only suggestion is, don't get all wireless controllers, they're not going to be compatible with the PS3, so it'll be a bit of a waste.

I understand that you're an anti-sony fanboi and all, but you should at least get your facts right.
PS3 will launch in SA on November 17 2006, the same date as in in Europe and the USA - and it will actually be officially released, Microsoft have yet to release the Xbox in SA, never mind the 360. Yes it will be ridiculously expensive (prolly around R5000 for the basic version, R6000 for the HDMI/Mem card/bigger HDD) but it will have a next gen DVD drive (Stand-alone HD-DVD/Blu-Ray player will cost more than R6000), and backward compatibility...

Fair enough, fair enough, the late 2007 is an opinion and I should have said as much.

Experience tells me that The rest of the world sees a "worldwide" launch as US EU and Japan. Servere shortages (Sony themselves are saying there'll be about 1/3 as many PS3's available as there were 360's because of similtaneous launch)

I reckon we won't see it till Feb/March 2007 at best. Quantities only towards the end of next year. I'll wager a public apology that I'm right ;)

And while the 360 hasn't been "released" here it is available, with a warranty as well from Prophecy, among others. The local launch is probably going to be October, but if you want one today you can buy it here. That's more my point.

i would like to see Sony releasing 6 million units at once.

i would like to see Sony stating why their "next-gen" basic doesnt have HDMI output.

i would like to see Sony fooling people into making them believe Blu-Ray's 20GB extra space advantage over HD-DVD will justify $500.

i would like to see Sony proving their cell powered PS3 is "faster" than the X360.

i would like to see a lot of things but till then i will happily play on my X360 and the upcoming Wii. ;)
