PlayStation Black Friday 2021 deals launched

This is why PC gaming makes more sense. Those would be poor prices for undiscounted new releases on PC. It doesn't take long to break even with the cost of PC gaming gear relative to the cost of a Series X or PS5.

I don't know about that. Bought my series X and 3 years worth of gamepass in December last year and I feel like it's been a pretty cost effective move.

I've played so many different games, at quality settings not achievable with the PC hardware I have, and haven't spent a cent on Steam.

I don't really see PC hardware coming near break even for me.

Yes, the console game specials leave a lot to be desired, but the AAA game release prices are much the same across platforms.

Let's not forget the quality of games Sony have pushed out in the last few years.

I'm not really trying to start the age old console Vs PC war, just trying to point out that you aren't seeing the big picture. Times have changed

Game Pass Ultimate is a whole different level of value though, so that's not comparing apples and apples. Also, the PC version of Game Pass is nuts in its own right anyway.

As far as subscription services go, Uplay+ and EA Play Pro are only available on PC and both are insane value. There's also Humble Monthly, for PC only.

AAA game prices are not the same across platforms. The majority of AAA titles can be preordered from stores like CDKeys (which is legit, nothing like G2A) for R600-800. And the prices drop quickly. It didn't take long for Horizon Zero Dawn to cost around R300, and it's even cheaper now. Red Dead 2 has been around R500 for a very long time now. Resident Evil Village is a bit over R500. I don't follow too much these days, but I see Elden Ring is R720 and Battlefield 2042 is R840. Far Cry 6 is R820 and will drop like a stone before long. And all EA and Ubisoft games can be had via EA Play Pro and Uplay+ anyway.

This is only applicable to people who play a ton of games though, and who demand access to their favourite titles. There's no touching the cost-effectiveness of an Xbox Series X with Game Pass Ultimate if you're happy to just play whatever falls on your lap.

EA play is available for PS. Anyway happy on the drop for the subscription to R499 for the online pass. Red Dead Redemption 2 though was cheaper for a long time in the retail stores. Hope Battlefield 2042 has a bit of a price drop.

A gaming PC is stupidly expensive to build at this point in time and anything coming in under R10k isn't worthy of the power of Xbox One/PS4.

It's not fair to compare last-gen consoles though. Xbox One with Game Pass is about as cheap as you can go, but that's a mediocre gaming experience. You can find secondhand desktop gaming PCs that will exceed that power level anyway.

The current-gen is PC, PS5 and Series X. If you're weighing up which way to go, consider what you'd spend on a console (R12,000) and add that to what you'd spend anyway on a PC, seeing as a gaming PC is still a PC. If you're years away from upgrading your work machine, perhaps a console makes more sense. But if your PC is getting long in the tooth, then the difference is a standalone GPU and spending a bit more on your input devices. Another possibility is that someone might already have a desktop PC that just needs a GPU upgrade.

You don't need to spend much more than the cost of a console on a gaming upgrade for a PC, especially for 1080p and especially if you're buying secondhand. Consoles only achieve 30-60 fps, which is pretty easy to get at 1080p and even 1440p with a PC.

Humble Monthly is kind of sort of baked into Game Pass now.

Gaming PC's still don't make sense to me for the lack of polish and simply not wanting to sit upright at a desk after a long day.

After acquiring a gaming pc earlier in the year I've (properly) used it once to play from Age of Empires and that's pretty much been it, not it does some crypto mining and my wife uses it while I play on my Xbox Series X.

Also rand for rand you are simply not going to get games on the same level as the Series X. You mentioned 1080p which is so last gen compared to play games at 4K (dynamic sure) at 60 fps on my Xbox without any worries about drivers needing updating and mouse pointers constantly in the ****ing way.

And that's when the games run and aren't full of some bullshit.

Nope, even if consoles were more expensive it would still be my preferred option for lifestyle reasons.

Eh, not too sure about that. I've been gaming on PCs for almost my whole life and technical problems have been far and few between.

That said, I'm no console hater. I just think an avid gamer will never find a more cost-effective platform than PC. The savings on games is so extreme that for most gamers it has to add up quite quickly, way past the additional hardware cost.

Seeing as I'm into the Apple ecosystem now, I am strongly considering just ditching PC games and going MacBook + Series X + PS5. Not so much for the cost but because it's a much simpler and more portable setup. The cost of console games is deeply off-putting though to that end.

Pretty much what I’ve been doing for a decade, MacBook + consoles.

You can only play so many games and quite honestly at present with Game Pass being what it is I buy about one game a year at the moment as I simply don’t need to.

That will change a little when I go PS5 eventually but even then it will likely be one every six months.

Now THAT will be terrible ROI to have a 12k console that sees a game only every few months. Then again my PC is living a pretty similar life.

Sure you can amass a huge library of games for little money on the PC (I have a massive one for no money even) but when it comes to actually playing them it’s a different story.

So Rand/time actually played I don’t think there is all that much between it.

Xbox + Game Pass of course throws it all out the window. Over 3 years or so my entire console ownership + game spend comes down to less than R500 a month at present which is insanity.

only thing I'll be getting is TLoU 2 , never played it & the price looks right to get to it now. Otherwise I'm disappointed in the selection, no nier replicant, no significant price drop on GoT Dir. cut

2 Games I am still planning on buying for PS5:
Ghost of Tsushima directors cut
Spider-boy Miles Ultimate edition.

As for Xbox:
GamePass covered me with (Halo Inf + Forza H5)
but I did pick up AC Valhalla's, Season Pass on Xbox's Black Friday sale.

The only game I purchased from the BF sale as well.
Could not resist the 50% discount

Having access to all 3 (Gaming PC, Xbox and PS5) I would say each has their own niche.

Personally it depends on the game type for example for me:
Cyberpunk 2077 = PC Game,
Assassins Creed = Console Game
or
Ratchet and Clank = PS5 Game
Forza Horizon = Xbox Game
