Please help me find the name of this game! i only have a vague description.

Okay so around late nighties to early 2000's there was this arcade game i used to play in the corner store
for the life of me i cant recall the name and i have tried searching for it quite a few times over the past few month with little success.

Here's what i can remember:

It featured Akuma as the last boss (not always, he sometimes showed up after defeating the "last boss") - my memory is a little fuzzy but he could have just been the last boss.

One of the characters you could choose was a female fighter who could throw a fireball that exploded - disbursed into smaller balls in various directions

This same female fighter also had another move where she would turn into a phoenix/firebird fly up out of the screen and fly back down onto the opponent (or behind him if he moved forward).

thats about all i can remember - it was a fighting arcade game if that wasnt obvious already

been dying to play this game again but just couldnt find it

and no dont think it was a street fighter series game but must of been capcom if it featured Akuma but who knows

I recommend going onto YouTube and looking at some videos of the following games to see if it could have been them.

I know the Street Fighter games fairly well but I can't think of a female character who does what you describe. The Versus games (Marvel vs Capcom or Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter) tend to have stuff that looks a little more "crazy". Like moves that take up the entire screen, that sort of thing.

Possible matches:
Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo
Akuma appeared for the first time in this game, and was an optional last boss. If you met the requirements, he would destroy M Bison and then you would fight him.
Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter
Akuma was basically the second to last boss in this game. Your two characters would fight him, and if you defeated him, one of your characters fight then fight the other to determine whose ending you saw. So, basically he was the last boss. (EDIT: technically it was Cyber Akuma)
Street Fighter Alpha 2
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Not 100% sure if Akuma was an optional last boss in these but he did appear.
Street Fighter 3
Akuma was in some versions of Street Fighter 3 and I don't know the female characters well. Search youtube for "Street Fighter 3 Akuma"
Street Fighter 4
Street Fighter 4 appeared late in the 2000s but Akuma did appear in it and he was an optional last boss, also depending on requirements. Note that Street Fighter 4 was in 3D, not 2D.

Capcom vs Snk 2 but no one I know has that moveset. Closest would be King, Nakoruru or Mai.

It could well have been a Capcom vs SNK title. There were three of them:
SNK Vs Capcom: SVC Chaos
Capcom vs SNK
Capcom vs SNK 2

I think all of those had Akuma in, none of them were Street Fighter main series games, and perhaps one of the female SNK characters has the moveset you were thinking of.

sounds to me like a marvel vs capcom game, in the days you mention it would be either x-men vs street fighter, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter or Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes.

All three featured Akuma, but the female you describe sounds like Jean Grey/Phoenix who only appeared in Marvel vs Capcom 3 in 2011. But maybe there's another female character that fits your description in the above 3 games.

Edit: Forgot about the SNK games as Ancalagon mentions - could very well be those too

the female character with that exploding fireball was awesome, if you got your timing right you could through the fireball so that it exploded centre of your opponent killing them instantly one move and perfect

Nope, none of the above maybe i'm wrong about akuma or perhaps he was a knockoff character and not really Akuma

Mai is from King of Fighters. My favourite character to play with, then the drunk old man.

none of the above i'm afraid googled all of em last night

thought i found it in world warriors - the janne character but alas its not.
its def not a street fighter game nor any marvel/snk vs capcom game either

maybe i'm wrong about akuma featuring in the game, so if we focus on just the female character maybe someone will find it
just to reiterate she was able to throw a fireball that exploded (various directions), she also had another move where she would jump up (90 degrees) turn into a firebird/phoenix fly up (90 degrees) out of the screen and come back down to where your opponent was standing (if he moved she would land behind him).

hope that helps else i'll give up, been searching for a while now and found nada so hoping against all odds one of you might remember the game.
