I just want to follow the advice given here.

Trying to sell my wife's 1.9Tdi Polo.

And my tip would be... Money clears in my account before you get the keys.

Set up a proper contract and sign it at the police station list all issue the buyer was made aware of.
Fill in and submit the seller form even though its a shlep.
Make sure the money clears before handing over the keys.
Meet in safe places.

Is that really necessary especially for older cars? Are most private sales not considered voetstoots?

Serious questions.

Nope. While you will not have recourse via the CPA, you can still take legal action as covered under common law

edit: this will generally apply when the seller has knowingly not disclosed things about the car, eg accident history or mechanical faults.
