Please suggest a good method of transport per my situation.

Good day folks,

My birthday is next week and I am turning 30. That's the bad news and probably the part I will get roasted about.

I have had my learners license 4 times. I have spent with aid from my family a few years ago more than R6500 on driving lessons and failed my drivers test 2 times.

I have an intense fear of driving. Being on the road and just a general distaste for obtaining my driving credentials.

So. That's the explanation. Now the predicament.

I'm looking for something like a electric bicycle or a very lightweight scooter that I can use for getting from home to work and to town if need be.

Something affordable, stylish with a nice design and that I won't need a learners or license for.

Maybe you have a complete different suggestion to a vehicle I haven't seen yet?

A hover board would have rocked, but alas, it's out of stock here.

Thank you for any advice.

Edit: forgot to mention, I live 3 blocks from work. So I walk currently. It's just a bit tiring now and takes a while on foot.

How long is 3 blocks in metres? Is it worth the added expenses?

+1 for Segway if you want to spend 65k+ or just one of those little foot scooter things kids use.

Do you think it is wise if you have an intense fear of driving to subject other road users to you driving on the road (even if it is just a bike)? How far are 3 blocks? Can't be more than 1km and if so will not take more than 10mins.

Don't ever move to a city, unless it has very good public transport.

Makes me think of the saying -
"If you don't like the way I drive, stay off the pavement."

Please stay away from anything with two wheels, while you are still under fear of driving. First master your fear with 4 wheels, before putting pedestrians and drivers in danger.
Please keep walking, this will be good for you in the long "run"...

PS: I know people that walks over ten Km to work, and they're doing just fine.

Why don't you want to do the learners? You did it four times already so should be easy. So do your bike learners and get a scooter / bike, you will be set for 18 months before you have to do it again (or just get your license).

I'm 32 and can't drive a car. After doing my bike learners many times (5+) I finally did my bike license. I'm happy commuting with my bike to work, even in the rain it is not that bad with a rain suit.

Thanks for the advice and information so far. I've been walking for the past year and a half, so it's not like I'm lazy and complaining all of a sudden.

I thought a better alternative might be out there, and I still believe there is.

Also, I won't be driving in the middle of the road, so I need not overcome my fears.

Shot.

Are there no tuk tuks in your area like we have in Sandton and some other places?

You could just pay one of those guys to take you to and from work everyday for a fixed discounted price.

With such high unemployment rates I'm sure you'd find someone to carry u for a small fee.

Just get a bicycle, 3 blocks isn't that far (even to walk).

Bicycle it is then. I have to start somewhere. Walking just takes too long. Thanks guys. Sometimes making up your mind is a mission in itself.

I have heard psychologists can help with fears of things & phobias*
It's something you've been scared of for a long time, ever considered trying to resolve it?
*results may vary
