Normally if it's on the road you need to have a license for it.

Intense fear of driving wouldn't stop you from getting your drivers, every new driver is deathly afraid (especially with big trucks). You're 30 now. Time to pull up your socks, suck it up and just do it. Some of my friends even got prescriptions for drugs to relax them right before their drivers test, as their nerves usually get the better of them and they make unnecessary mistakes.

So what if you failed twice? Most people I know try again and again until they pass. Even if you get your license, I seriously doubt it's going to be economical for you to buy a car, pay insurance and maintenance and petrol, just to drive 3 blocks and/or to town to buy stuff.

A nice bicycle would do fine unless you want to chaff the cherries :p

I know how you feel |tera|.

I got my drivers license many years back and recently got a car, but developed a fear of driving.

I take the bus to work daily and my car is parked and covered in my back yard. People ask me why I don't use the car and I have to make up bull**** excuses. My advice is that you should give it some time and you will eventually get over your fear, I'm almost there :)

@OP Get your drivers. Seriously. It's affects your social/love life more than you'd think (I don't have my own car but usually get my bro's car for a few weeks at a time when he goes overseas, and the difference is noticeable).

And don't let failure get you down. Some of the cops are dodgy and will fail you so they can get a bribe.

6 times here. 3 times in PMB. 3 times in CPT.

First two times in PMB I didn't make it out the yard. Third time the guy nailed me on "aggressive driving".

I was turning into an intersection with two blind rises on either side. As I'm coming out, cars come from both side. So if I stay, the car on the right will have to swerve to avoid me and possibly hit the car coming from my left coz he would be in his lane. I judged that I had plenty of time to get across and not get hit by the guy coming from the left so I increased my speed a bit and made it across with plenty of room.

Complete the rest of the test without a hitch, and the guy tells me he failed me back at the blind rise spot :/

Cape Town. First two times didn't make it out of the yard. Both guys said I wasn't doing my checks properly when I knew I was (they probably wanted bribes).

Third time I get an awesome dude who sees I can drive after I almost screw up my alley docking coz I was stressing but still manage to get the car into the bay. He even gave me a free pass after I slightly tapped a pole while parallel parking (he pointed it out to me, but said not to worry and to hit the road). Afterwards he asked me why I hadn't gotten my drivers the previous times. Told him I had no damn idea...

Same with me pretty sure its for the money :p on my last one I had to pass a tractor on solid line up a hill and was passed :D.

Other times they said I wasn't checking blind spots even though I was, so on last one I moved my head like crazy so they couldn't miss it and like you she couldn't beleive I failed so many times on stupid things in the parking area was perfect in driving part.

Never hit a pole though only hit the kerb once, since my parallel angle was too wide :p.

Yeah, but he showed me some leniency which I am exceptionally grateful for. I've never been in or caused an accident since I got my drivers. I was in an accident once when I was still a learner where some old guy hit us from behind because he wasn't paying attention. I was slowing down coz someone was turning left and the guy behind me was talking to his dog or some **** and ploughed into us. It was such a farce. The moment he got out of his car his dog starts running around the street like a freaking crazy thing...

And there have been plenty of people who've gotten their drivers even thought their driving skills were majorly lacking. My friend's sister couldn't even change gears properly but because she's hot and made herself look good the guy passed her no problem. I'll never forget that morning I found that out. I'm at his place and hear someone killing their gears on the hill up to his house. I was like "Damn I feel sorry for that car." Then I hear the car pull up in front of his house and his sister comes out and is so happy that she got her drivers. My jaw dropped considering at this point I'd already failed three times...

It's crazy. You don't need to turn your head 90 degrees to see but you still need to do it that way just so the cops see you make the motion.

I passed my drivers the first time. I was confident and relatively stress free because my driving instructor was seated in the back seat.

Sometimes all it takes is a little reassurance.

Well I did mine in PMB and failed one of the occasions. A black colleague told me that I am in a predicament: they won't ask for bribes because I am white, in the event that I take them to the press in some exposé about fraud in turn they would also not pass me. That was all just his opinion, but I didn't pass in PMB.

Could you guys please post license plates of vehicles you might be driving so we can make sure we do not get close to you :p:D

On a serious note, well done for keeping at it.

Thanks lol just don't come to PMB :D

They've got cameras all over the yard at Pmb, and a car that has cameras that you can book for your license. If you think they have failed you unfairly, you can ask them to show you on the video why you failed.

I know plenty of people who have passed at Pmb with no problems at all.

I did my licence in 1997

First time I failed, because the examiner was a douchebag. Back then they didn't really take chances asking for bribes.

Second time I had a better examiner, and we ended up actually making small talk about braais and stuff while I drove. The people in front of me made a major stuff-up and I just waited patiently and he was more interested in rugby which we were discussing at the time. Passed with like 97 or something... very long ago... can't remember.
