So my macaroni router starts acting weird over the weekend. And telkom being telkom I actually dreaded phoning them on monday morning.

So I get my smokes, ashtray, cup of coffee and book. Expecting a long wait with that fscking elevator music. What a suprise, phone rang 3 times and they picked up. I didnt even get to light a smoke! Must be a fluke.

So the guy does his tech support thing and actually listens to me when I tell him it's the router and not the line. He suggested I swop the router at the nearest telkom store. Even gave me their number.

Mission number 2. Phone telkom store. Sit back, get ready for the wait. 3 calls and they pick up. Bloody hell, it's an anti-smoking conspiracy by them I tell you! Very nice lady, rifilwe picked up. Said she was bus with another customer and if i gave her my number she'd call me back. Right... like that's going to happen. This is telkom after all.

So I take a sip of coffee and try to light up again. Phone rings. arrrrrrrrgggghhhhhhhhhh! It's her. Told me to bring the router and that she'd swop it for me.

25 mins from the first call and I'm back home. With new (and better) router.

Just to be sure i took the phone of the hook. I need that bloody smoke :D

I just wish telkom could always be that fast and efficient.

i must agree, they have their "moments" where they seem to amase even the biggest telkom critics. i had a very similar experience with vodacom not so long ago

I've been pleasantly surprised by the service levels I've received from Telkom in the last 2-3 months.
I had to re-apply for a phone line in July. The waiting time to have my call answered was less than 2 minutes (my call to Sentech the previous day took over 11 minutes to be answered) and the guy was VERY friendly and polite. My exchange was full and I was told the install would take 4 weeks. I received an sms confirming the August 4th installation date later that evening and I received a call on the 3rd of August from a technician confirming the appointment. The technician arrived at the promised time and within 30 minutes, I had a working phone line. The 4 week installation time was too long, but I appreciated the fact that Telkom stuck to it.

When Sentech anounced changes to their MyWireless packages, I applied for ADSL. I made the call on the 2nd of September (took about 90 seconds to be answered) and was told to expect a 5 week waiting period. On the 13th of September, I was informed that installation would be in 14 days and on the 21st, I received a call from a technician to set up an appointment. Yesterday (26/09) the technician arrived as planned and I now have my netgear router connected and synched. One of these days I'll organise an ISP.

I still think Telkom is the devil, but I know there are many people (normal grunts like us) in the company who actually take pride in doing a job properly and I'd like to give them a big THANK YOU.

On a side note, I called the ADSL help line and according to them, my ADSL application is still in the planning phase. They haven't even assigned a port yet. I wonder how long it will take them to update their helpdesk system. I'm sure the billing system will be perfectly up to date :)
