Dear Valued Customer,

In our efforts to continuously improve our services, we are required to do some critical upgrades on our Core network which will result in intermittent service disruption.

To this end maintenance has been scheduled as follows:

Maintenance Window
2004/08/15 00:00 - 14:00

Effective Downtime
A total of 6 hours intermittent downtime is expected during
the maintenance window.

Affected Services
All Internet related services will be affected i.e. Intermittent loss of connectivity will be experienced during the maintenance window.

Please contact support@sentech.co.za (or the Call
Centre: 086 073 6832 or +27 11 215 7343) for any queries.

Kind regards

Sentech

Ok, maybe I'm just nittpicking BUT....

In every Support alert I've EVER had from IS / UUNet / SAIX they've not treated me like an idiot.

They TELL me what is being done .... not a smoke and mirrors notification (are they trying to hide the fact that the fsckedup to start with ?)

simple really - keep the customer properly in the loop.

I was just about to copy that same email.
"Critical Update" sounds like MS speak for fixing an error that one of their previous patches "fixed"

I personally don't care how much they yo yo the damn thing as long as they fix it. Well until the end of August of course. At least this indicates that they are doing something.

Or maybe not. Maybe they hired some guy off the street to come in occasionally and reboot the thing to make us think that they are working on it while they sip cocktails on a beach in Tahiti with Elvis courtesy of our subscriptions.

Just because you're Paranoid, doesn't mean that they aren't out to get you.

On the postive side:

a.) They have sent the mail in advance of the downtime
b.) They are doing in on the Weekend, and mainly in the early morning
c.) They have given a defined window period, and told us what to expect (ie. intermittent service) during that window.

Of course the message could be more informative etc, but bearing in mind they were simply taking the network down without warning, one has to say they are at least moving in the right direction...

Maintenance and Fault Notifications - Microwave upgrade: 15 August 00:00 - 14:00
Aug 13, 2004 - 01:32 PM
Post subject: Microwave upgrade: 15 August 00:00 - 14:00 Microwave upgrade: 15 August 00:00 - 14:00

A critical microwave upgrade will be performed on 15 August from 00:00 until 14:00. All Internet related services will be intermittently affected during the downtime.
==============================================================

Now, this is a message that gives people just enough information.

Well done.

Next steps would be for them to move from a forum type interface to a fault management interface...but that will take time ;-)

One positive thing about the Microwave upgrade and intermittent downtime is that I can switch off all the pc's. It will be so quiet when I wake up I might even think the power is off ... again.

Jhbgirl .. Happy Belated Birthday. Hope it wasn't like the Fiday the 13th movies. *g*

I find it very sad that the best speeds I've had in months were during the time allocated for the "intermittent downtime" yesterday. No doubt everyone else had disconnected.

I found the best speed in months during the long weekend. I guess everyone was away since the speed was good at all times even during peak hours.

My Wi has totalled sucked since the upgrades.. but I guess Im unlucky since it seems nobody is complaining. Maybe the speed fix is working ? It sure is not working for me.
