Johannesburg - A 17-year-old girl died in Livingstone hospital in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday after she was shot by her policeman friend, Eastern Cape police said.

Superintendent Priscilla Naidu said the officer was a captain in the Port Elizabeth VIP protection unit.

Allegedly, he accidentally shot his friend around 01:00 on Monday when they had returned from the beach.

The officer and two of his friends, including the girl, were inside his bakkie near the beach when he took his 9mm pistol out of the cubby hole.

He was allegedly attempting to make his firearm safe when a shot went off. The bullet passed through his left hand, through the driver's seat and into the stomach of the 17-year-old girl.

Both were taken to the Humansdorp hospital for treatment.

The officer was treated and discharged while the girl was taken to Livingstone hospital to undergo an operation to remove the bullet.

The girl, from Hankey near Port Elizabeth, died on Monday evening of her wound.

Initially, a case of negligent handling of a firearm and of using a firearm whilst under the influence of liquor were opened but a charge of murder was added after the girl died.

The officer had not been formally charged but was admitted to the Hunter's Craig psychological institution.

He would be charged after being released from hospital, said Naidu.

This story just doesn't add up. First of all, what the hell is a police captain doing getting drunk with an under-age girl at the beach until 1am? Wow, the standard of people running the SAPS is atrocious.

Secondly, how the hell did the gun get pulled out? For what reason? As a captain of the police, the safety would surely have been on already or he was trying to drunkenly impress her - with his manhood extension. Or the alternative is he and the friend tried some not-so-gentle persuasion, but that's just an assumption based on the fact that nothing makes much sense here. EDIT: that's probably not the case considering the bullet went through the driver's seat which he was sitting in - clearly there was no struggle and he wouldn't shoot his own hand intentionally (well probably not).

What an absolute twat!

Lots of this story doesn't add up....

He must have been sitting in the passenger seat for it to go through his left hand, then the drivers seat, then the girls stomach.... But even at that, the physics just don't seem to be that easy from what I can gather..

But beyond that bit of BS dished out by the lying SAPS VIP ppl.. We also need to know what the hell this "captain" was doing with a 17yr old in his vehicle at 1am? and also why he had a loaded firearm in a cubby hole of what was very probably an unmarked vehicle whilst he was not on duty.

it says the girl was his "friend"...

he's probably lying, maybe the fool shot the girl & then shot himself in the hand as an after thought. with the saps detective/csi ability anything is possible - the cops probably don't log bullets used.

She could have been on his lap

If she got his gun somehow (lets assume he was trying to force her into something), which he then grabs at with his left hand and turns away from him back to her, it would account for the hand, seat and passenger wound.

All very fishy...

I shudder to think reservists carry firearms.... when captains don't even know to clear the chamber, point the gun away at all times, or even put the safety on.

Don't even own a gun, and i know that much.

What do reservists have to do with this? Many of them own their own firearms and will have done the competency test. There is no guarantee that the 'real' police are competent though.

As mentioned earlier by someone else, rank and file, if a captain acts like this, how about the officers beneath him, or the reservists supporting them..... follow by example?

Reservists are the ones who couldn't cut it into the 'real' police.
As for the competency test, what a laugh, reservists are constantly in the news for a wide assortment of crimes. Then again so are our regular cops.

Let's for a second forget about the underage friend who he had at the beach around 1am.

Personal firearm, or police issued service pistol, an idiot is still going to kill someone if he cant handle a gun safely. :p

datafreak : You're treading on some very dangerous ground...

Some of the reservists I know are ALOT better than the "real" cops... they've chosen to be reservists over and above their normal, better paying jobs...

Reservists are constantly in the news for crimes?.. where?.. links if you please...

and No, we won't forget the underage friend.. or the firearm.. they're two aspects of this case that are very worrying.

no offense but who the fk are you to threaten someone, he is entitled to his opinion about the police and whoever else is part of it. what is he supposed to be scared of you saying 'you are treading on dangerous ground.'.

Hopefully the witness will come clean about what really happened, assuming he wasn't asleep or a colleague of the Keptan.

I think Toxic Bunny answered most of what you asked.

Reservists are not people who couldn't cut it as cops although some may be. Reservists are, usually, people wanting to give back to their communities.

Reservists don't (well not usually) use their own firearms on duty. My point was that, as a firearm owner, you have to have passed a competency test. This is no guarantee that you aren't an idiot, but it is a step in the right direction. The police captain may not own his own firearm and would, therefore, not have had to do the competency test. He ought to have had training in the service but that could have been many years ago, or a complete breakdown - who knows.

I do follow your point about tone at the top, but reservists don't, in general, follow that tone. They tend to have their own motivations as to why they do the job.

Well I am not actually threatening anyone... did I threaten, or just make a statement?

He is blanketing the entire reservists as more useless than the rank and file of the police... when you'll probably find the reservists are more dedicated than the average rank and file because they CHOSE to do duty over and above their own jobs.

He may be entitled to his opinion, but i am also entitled to challenge his opinion if I feel it is incorrect.

I think I would rather trust a reservist because most of them do it out of civil duty, and im sure most of them are in better shape to catch criminals than 90% of the policeforce.

Well said, nothing wrong with some healthy debate :D

That said, i definitely don't want to paint all reservists as incompetent.
As is the case with most, a rotten few spoil the basket.
I'm always willing to admit if im wrong, or too much was read into what was said.

Back to that captain though, he's a twat, and i don't believe his story.

Nice reply, see my response on ToxicBunny's too.

Getting kinda off topic, so to get back on track i'm keen to see how this story evolves... I bet he changes his story.
