As mentioned earlier by someone else, rank and file, if a captain acts like this, how about the officers beneath him, or the reservists supporting them..... follow by example?

Reservists are the ones who couldn't cut it into the 'real' police.
As for the competency test, what a laugh, reservists are constantly in the news for a wide assortment of crimes. Then again so are our regular cops.

Nice Generalisation

I have been a Reservist for the past 7 years know and I do it because I wanted to give something back to my community + It lets me legally have a go at the taxi drivers.

The majority of resevist I work with are fully dedicated to the SAPS and give a 110%, most of them are in semi specialist units such as Flying squad, Dog unit, Air wing, Detective warrent tracing team. These units have a high standard and dont take slackers

We spend our own money on equipment and training to ensure that we can do the job properly.

We do the job because we want to not for a paycheck and that tends to mean that we are more dedicated.

There are reservist who need to be kicked out, I have worked with a few of them but they dont last long.

As for this captain, alcohol and guns dont mix, also just because he is in the VIP unit doesnt make him special.

He needs to be kicked out of the SAPS

This bit is good to see

Initially, a case of negligent handling of a firearm and of using a firearm whilst under the influence of liquor were opened but a charge of murder was added after the girl died.

The officer had not been formally charged but was admitted to the Hunter's Craig psychological institution.

He would be charged after being released from hospital, said Naidu.

This has always been my impression, but go lightly on datafreak because he has basically conceded that he was under the wrong impression, or created the wrong impression.
He needs to be kicked out of the SAPS
If only, but we all know that wont happen.

That is suspect! - he should have been charged with attempted murder from the start, and that charge reverted to murder when she died.

Please see my response to Albereth and ToxicBunny.

I do apologize for viewing you in the same generalized basket as the rotten eggs, and i acknowledge there are a few of you heroes out there

On your statement that he should be kicked out: completely agreed.

datafreak : You're treading on some very dangerous ground...

Some of the reservists I know are ALOT better than the "real" cops... they've chosen to be reservists over and above their normal, better paying jobs...

Reservists are constantly in the news for crimes?.. where?.. links if you please...

and No, we won't forget the underage friend.. or the firearm.. they're two aspects of this case that are very worrying.

Sister is a reservist and yeah, they choose the job because they actually want to do something about crime instead of picking the nose like a gold rush like other real cops :D

well all I can say is that it is such a dumb accident though this guy has to live with knowing he killed an innocent young female

sounds more to me like he was trying to rape the girl, killed her, then realized WTF he did so he shot himself in his left hand.

Lots of this story doesn't add up....

He must have been sitting in the passenger seat for it to go through his left hand, then the drivers seat, then the girls stomach.... But even at that, the physics just don't seem to be that easy from what I can gather..

But beyond that bit of BS dished out by the lying SAPS VIP ppl.. We also need to know what the hell this "captain" was doing with a 17yr old in his vehicle at 1am? and also why he had a loaded firearm in a cubby hole of what was very probably an unmarked vehicle whilst he was not on duty.

It does actually make sense. If he was in the driver's seat but facing to the the left (i.e to his other drunken mate) he could easily have fired the weapon through his hand, through the driver's seat and directly into her stomach. He'd have leaned over to get it out of the cubby hole, then continued facing left while she is in the back. I don't see an issue with that...

To make the weapon safe, you take it away from where people are, point it downwards, away from your legs and you never put your hand over the barrel opening whilst moving the slide, unless you're drunk/careless/stupid or both.

It is more likely to have gone through the passenger seat, unless he swiveled in the chair or was doing it standing up, leaning into the vehicle.

Why was he making it safe in any case? Did he have a bullet in the chamber? Did he intend to show it to someone.. what?

Was he tested for alcohol?

This is all very bad publicity for the police and any civilian doing this would have been charged immediately, since they are covered by the same laws.

Sackboy - as per the article, he was pissed. It's very possible that it played out as is described in the article, but he's just as guilty regardless. I reckon he was using the gun to try to impress someone...

I've dealt with this captain before, much like all of the VIP unit the IQ was lacking and the desire to pull out his gun quick.
