Smollett was charged last month with felony disorderly conduct for the alleged false report he made with Chicago police on Jan. 29, according to the Cook County State's Attorney's Office. In it he claimed he was assaulted by two masked men who hurled racist and homophobic slurs.

Effectively paying a fine and doing community service when he hasn't done anything wrong seems a bit unjust.

Clever lawyers pled it down to forfeiting bail and community service in exchange for dropped charges and a clean record. To be fair, if they bought of the Nigerians to change their story, it would be difficult for the government to prove anything. The fine and community service is very telling though.
