That is actually very well priced. Plus, Meganes are pretty scarce on the roads so it would stand out on the roads, for sure.

What does the base Golf GTi retails for nowadays? R600k?

I assume none for sale, awaiting the Golf 8.

slightly used ones go for over R600k

Dude, ALL BRANDS got mostly crap service. They not mechanics, they diagnostic plug in operators and part replacers. So something like a loose terminal isnt a field on diagnostics, they will swop out your ECU before checking that lol. I changed VW's after that incident for better service further away. Same with my Clio, I take it 80KM for a service because they actually care. give detailed breakdowns of everything, reports on batteries, tires, as well as recommended preventative maintence. They also found faults the previous dealer created. like not re-attaching parts properly etc... As far as i know, BMW probably the best

I can't really disagree, the likes of Morne are few and far between, which is why I haven't been back to a dealership since selling my Golf. My Touareg and my fiance's Q3 go to private mechanics I know personally, with parts supplied from people I know personally.

Car prices generally seem insane these days. And I was looking at getting a car once I moved :crying:

I also looked at cars and immediately decided to rather keep my car for the next 10 years, no way am I paying that kind of money for a car.

Not to mention the maintenance.

A friend of mine's car has lost power on his Polo 2016 model (not sure what engine). VW wants R5 600 to do diagnostics.

That reminds me. They are 3 brothers and 2 sisters. All of them drive Polo's and they all live together. It looks like a VW dealership in their yard. The guy I'm talking about works on the production line at Woodlands Dairy in Humansdorp, so cannot possibly be earning that much. I was very close to asking him whether they got some sort of deal for buying 5 cars in bulk, but didn't want to be too nosy - and you know I can be nosy :p

He is stupid to take it to VW, there's so many independent guys out there that can do a way better job without screwing you.

The example of the used ones are very well specced. Get a few desirable options and your brand new GTI can be 700K.

For a golf? Bloody hell. For less than that you could probably get a slightly used arteon or 3 series with more features than the golf.

How does the latest Polo GTi compare to the other cars mentioned here? What about it's reliability.

I'm looking at either getting a Polo GTi or Golf 7 GTi within the next 6 months. The Golf GTD is also a good option for me as I do lots of mileage. 50k km per year.

New one? As in the 2.0T ?

Its the best Polo GTI to date. and that engine is proven. Its also deceptively quick as they defiantely underquoted power. My personal issues with it is that its a bit generic. A well speccéd 1.0TFSi polo can look better. Also things like 18"wheels, LED's Should be standard.

Doing 50k km a year is going to write off the value of your Gti chop chop, won't that be a bit of a waste considering the cost per km based off the purchase price?

All of you seem to have your VW mechanics in JNB.. I just got out of warranty/service plan, so for future reference, anyone got a trusted, tried and tested VW guru in Cape Town? DM would be appreciated :)

Was killing off some Friday afternoon time by asking for service quotes on these different cars that I mentioned I'd like. I was curious to see how much dealers around where I stay charge for service. A service here includes the usual, so your air filter, oil change, oil filter, etc. Labour is included. These places are in the general Sandton area. These are the results for the cars I actually got a price for:
  1. Fiesta ST 1.6 - R3900
  2. Focus ST1/3 - R4300
  3. BMW F20 125i - R6000
  4. Polo GTI 1.4 DSG - R4600 (DSG service excluded? Add about R10K for DSG service I think)
  5. Golf VI GTI DSG - R4500 (DSG service not included)
  6. Golf VII GTI DSG - R4900 (DSG service not included)
  7. Audi S3 8P DSG - couldn't really say but the nice Guy said about R18 000 including DSG service and about maybe R7000 without
Dealerships don't play :)
