Polo GTI 1.4 TSI advice

I would stay away from the 1.4 turbo engine: a small highly-stressed engine is a recipe for financial ruin.

Proof?
This engine has been in SA for quite a while, no reports of failures.
Its been available for almost 5years in the UK, not a lot of faults to warrant your post.

5yrs is not long enough to measure the longevity of an engine. One of the longest running engines I have seen is an old 3L Merc 6 cylinder inline NA diesel - about 20years old, 550000 km on the clock and still chugging along without any major engine issues. Show me a TD that has that kind of mileage.

The proof is simple physics: the more power you extract from an engine, the quicker it goes bang. This is why in F1 you can get 900-1000hp from a 2.4 V8, but they only last for a few 100kms.

I've seen Toyotas that have done more than 1 000 000km.
After 5 years of production from one of the most powerful manufacturers in the market is good enough for me. There's 1.4TSi pushing 180 wkw, that's shows it can more than just the standard power. VW has this engine in almost every car in their model range, Polos to Small SUVs.
The mini pushes 147kW from a 1.6, they very good.
Bit harsh to knock em down with just a narrow minded theory...

I like how physics is 'narrow-minded theory' in your book :D

My brother in law is a mechanic down here. He recently replaced a 1.9TDi engine in a 2007 Caddy panel van, used by a courier company. It had over a million km on the clock. A water pipe rusted through and the engine ran hot. I also personally drove an A4 Audi 1.9TDi with over 400k on the clock. Still goes strong. These engines lasts very long if looked after.

You are probably referring to the 1.9 pump-diesel TDi - an old-school lump of cast iron putting out less than 100kW. The 1.4 TSi pumps out 133kW(?). So the 1.9 is much less stressed than the 1.4, which, all things being equal should last longer.

Ok, maybe I have the year wrong. But it still is over 1mil. The Caddy came out in 2005.

Naks: I think the engine is the same as in the Golf 5. So yes the Pump Duse engine. The Merc you mentioned is def not a high stressed engine as you put it.

Well then using your infallible theory every single car today shouldnt last more than one year

100 years ago a 20L engine could barely get you past 200km/h and that was a purpose built vehicle
Now a 2L gets you there easily, and that car can keep going for several years

Sure, these new TSI engines MAY have longevity issues, but citing only physics as your reasons is illogical when presented with history. I highly doubt we've already hit the physics barrier to making better engines

Be carefull. I have a Polo GTi (1.4 TSi) and are having endless problems with it. I have told VW today to take the car back, I am fed-up with it!

Bought the Polo GTI a year ago. Amazing car. I drove from Pretoria to South Broom (roughly 700km's) with 2 people and luggage. Range was still 150km when I got down there. Absolutely brilliant car.

Plus:
1. Acceleration is phenomonal
2. Fuel economy is fantastic considering the amount of power. My sister has a 120i and it gets like 9.8L/100km. The GTI will get 7.0 if you drive well
3. Handling... FANTASTIC
4. Sun roof is a MUST

My Issues though:

1. The boot is tiny
2. Gearbox is noisy when using paddle shifts
3. Torque steering gets troublesome
4. No service plan/maintenace plan is troublesome. But my services run at R2,000. Much cheaper than 'buying' a plan.
5. It is expensive for what it is
