Bought the Polo GTI a year ago. Amazing car. I drove from Pretoria to South Broom (roughly 700km's) with 2 people and luggage. Range was still 150km when I got down there. Absolutely brilliant car.

Plus:
1. Acceleration is phenomonal
2. Fuel economy is fantastic considering the amount of power. My sister has a 120i and it gets like 9.8L/100km. The GTI will get 7.0 if you drive well
3. Handling... FANTASTIC
4. Sun roof is a MUST

My Issues though:

1. The boot is tiny
2. Gearbox is noisy when using paddle shifts
3. Torque steering gets troublesome
4. No service plan/maintenace plan is troublesome. But my services run at R2,000. Much cheaper than 'buying' a plan.
5. It is expensive for what it is

All cars are now expensive.
I find it strange you have excellent fuel economy, "Phenomenal power", "fantastic handling", relatively cheap service costs and still find it expensive for what it is?

(yes I agree its expensive compared to the Fiesta)
But you have an overall good experiencing do you not see the cost paying off?

No of course, I bought mine second hand. I don't regret buying it for a single second. But the new ones are going for over R300k.... which is a lot of money. But if you think about the size of the car, other expenses (such as tyres and service) you will be paying a lot more over the lifetime of the car then just your monthly payments and insurance. That's what I meant. And yes you can argue that all cars are like that, but my main factor was the lack of a service plan, and taking the price into consideration. And it only comes with a three year warranty, which to me is a bit of a rip-off, considering the amount of money you are paying for this car.

Reality is VW is selling a ton of cars, so they don't have to give you much extra to sweeten the deal. They don't care - without you there is still a long line of customers waiting.

Yeah, when you need to pay R20k+ to replace brake pads, you truly appreciate the value for money...
20k for just pads? To fit a complete Brembo brake kit on my car (rotors, calipers, etc) costs about that. I think your price is a bit incorrect.

Either you are confused and it's not just brake pads...or you are very gullible and someone is taking you for a ride.

Brake pads will be no more than R1000 for a set.

Last time I checked the Corsa OPC isn't so fast that it needs to run ceramics.

i think he was talking about the opc brakes

Doesn't really matter if it's the OPC or the GTI the price is way off.

Their pads will cost about the same...if they aren't in fact the same identical brake systems.

No I'm not saying that.

I'm saying the chances are pretty high that they could be using the same or very similar systems and therefore *might* even have exactly the same pads.

Either way the cost will be pretty damn close. Brakes are standardised components, there's no special Opel brakes vs VW brakes it's purely a question of which manufacturer they chose to use for any given model.

The Polo might be R200 cheaper at R293,900 vs R 294,100 for the Corsa, but you get a lot less. Less power at higher rpm, less torque, no service plan and a less sporty looking 5 door body.

Wrong, OPC uses 4 pot calipers, Polo uses normal brakes.
OPC brakes are atlease 3 times more than what a Polo brakes would cost.

Why not? I drive a Citroën; the same rear brakes are used on, among others, some Volvo models as well as some Ford Mondeos. There are only so many manufacturers of braking systems and only higher-tier vehicles tend to run specially designed braking hardware. It's unlikely - given the variables - but not impossible.

Apparently its 204 liters - pretty small compared to the 276 available in the Ford Fiesta.

You do also get the quickest 0-100 time and a 7 speed DSG gearbox. I'd prefer a 5 door car in any case.

Yes you do get more from the Corsa.
But if you take into account the package of the Corsa with LSD and the Polo, the speed is very similar.
It is mostly due to the efficiency of the Polo. The balance of speed and fuel consumption, also the Polo gearbox is better than the Opel.
