Pointing is a good batsman and I rate him as the best captain of the decade. Sure he had McGrath and Warne, but we had Shaun Pollock who got the best bowling ranking of the last two decades and the longest spell of a ranking above 900. Shaun Pollock was the best bowler and we still could not beat Aus, why?

Remember one thing just because you have a couple of good players does not mean you will automatically win. There is a reason the aussies are always ranked no 1 and it does not boil down to 2 strike bowlers. There is far more to winning than having 2 good bowlers. I am sure though people know a captain does not just say ok go bowl and that is the end of his job :D.

Ponting is by far the best aussie captain ever i think. He deserves it and as pumpkin says 2 worlds cup and icc champions trophy (without mcgrath or warne plus a pretty poor aussie team). Not to mention a test record that cannot be beaten. What did they get something like 16 test wins in a row or something if i recall.

No he isn't. Steve Waugh has a higher winning percentage.;)

If you have two great bowler in your side you will 90% of the time take 20 wickets in a test which will mean that you will win if your batsmen do any decent job.

Yep, but he has captained the worlds most successful side... can't deny him that. Poor Kallis has had to play with a side that blows hot and cold, unfortunately cold when it really counts. Hate to say it but Aussies are the best cricketing nation by a long mile and Ponting deserves it.

This was about the individual player not the team. Aus team of the decade but kallis should be player of the decade.

Good decision, how could they ever give it to Kallis? the guy chokes more often than not in big games.

their batting is pretty much the same, Ponting is a way better fielder than Kalis, Kallis can bowl but then Ponting is captain with 2 World Cups and an ICC champions under his belt

How is this even a competition?

He is not a better fielder in test cricket. Ponting has dropped more catches in the slips than kallis. Bowling makes a big difference. Captaincy you can't not prove it was pontings doing, many including myself will disagree with you but with bowling you can prove kallis is a class allrounder. Ponting is just a class batsmen but overall as a cricketer kallis is better since he brings more things to the table and hence should be the player of the decade.

Because we only had polly who was a great bowler and ntini and kallis who were a very good bowlers while they had two all time greats in warne and mcgrath and two very good bowlers in gillespie and lee.

You could flip a coin to decide which one was the best.
They probably gave it to Ponting because he "dominates" attacks, whereas Kallis tends to stay in 2nd gear all the time.

Allan Donald was better than Warne and Ntini was just two below Warne. Warne bowled better than Ntini in tests and Ntini bowled better than Warne in ODI's. It is only Warne's character that made him so well known.

Australia do produce quality players, but they always go for a higher target. In that 438 game, if we did bat first, we would have lost because we would never have gone with the intention to get 400, where batting second we were forced to. That is the difference Pointing makes to his team.

Which would be fair enough if kallis didn't have the bowling as well. I have no problems with ponting as batsman of the decade , the issue is player of the decade.

I'd give still give it to Ponting for the way he bats.
I'd say he should maybe get 51/100 votes between the 2.

If I had to pick one to watch, it would be Ponting.
Just a highlights package then Kallis.

Most people would say it's Border.
He took over alosing team, he got the ashes back and kept them.

imho that is going to far back, Waugh was a brilliant captain, but also had a brilliant team.
