Portable power stations available for under R10,000 in South Africa

Portable power station price joy in South Africa

South African households with a budget of R10,000 for backup power can protect themselves from the expected return in load-shedding.

Energy analyst Chris Yelland recently analysed Eskom's generating performance data and found concerning trends the power utility's energy availability factor (EAF).
I mean the EAF could be lower cause the planned outages is higher, if it wasn't almost twice as high as last year, we'd be sitting at way over 60%.
Chris is feeling the stress of not being in the news all the time nowadays

At what capacity does a power bank become a "station"? And when does it become a UPS again?
A UPS is not a portable power station. A UPS is for quick saving and turn off or as a switch over to another source.

Cheaper than ever. Hardly! I bought a 300W for R3,500 2 years ago. For double this it is still over R7,000 except the Bluetti but power stations are not made equal and the Bluetti was cheaper and inferior at that time. Article or click-bait no doubt paid by the manufacturers like many others on MyBB under the guise of informing.

Loadshedding is back?

Funny, must be the City of Cape Town doing a good job this side then.

Delta 2s were going for R24K about 2 years ago. Now it's R10K, which is a fair price. It has a 5 year warranty so not a bad product.

I don't get it. Perhaps it's the SA mindset but as far as I'm concerned power stations generate power, not store it.

Bluetti are a decent brand. I have one from 3-4 years ago (Li NCM) and it's still fine. Only Anker (via IC) and Ecoflow offer local 5 year warranties though.

You mean world wide?

They're also called that in the US. You can however connect it to a solar panel and then it will generate the power too.

Here is the official Portable Power Station thread:

Taking my cue from @FiestaST

As far as I'm concerned that's when it becomes a power station. People are far too forgiving when it comes to renaming things for the sake of marketing.

I mean technically you're not wrong, but an H.E dam is also considered a power station even though it merely stores energy in the form of water that is released when it opens the gates, so in that sense a battery is both an energy storage device and an on demand "generator".....so a "power station".

And fossil fuels just store energy in carbon hydrogen bonds. I like where this is going.

At the end of the day it all ends in turning a turbine... except solar though it's nuclear and technically a form of thermal

I agree. I even complained about the naming of these things some years ago. Technically speaking the solar panel is the 'generator' then. And 99% of people won't even use these with an attached overpriced proprietary panel.

Funny definition of thermal you have there...

Nuclear power stations are thermal...
Solar power is powered by the sun... Which is a nuclear reaction but isn't thermal...
Radiation isn't heat until it hits something

Is that an AAA 1.5 volt generator in your pocket or are you just happy to see me.
