I am considering to get a WiFi router instead of a 2nd SIM. It will be used for my Ipad 2 and MacBook Pro.

Got no experience with these; can someone please give me a rundown on how they work, are they effective, can I connect the above to it, how close does it have to be to the iPad (will it still work with it in my bag) etc.

Thanks

Yep, very good idea. Also commonly referred to as a Mifi.
1sim loaded with plenty data, brings down your overal cost.
Lots of different models out there.
Vodacom offer these models:
R206Z 21.6 MBPS WIFI MODEM
R208 MIFI Router
R212-Z LTE MIFI Router

If you want LTE go for the R212, cost around R1500, if you're looking of the cheapest option, take the R206, cost around R750.

They all have batteries and can be charged via USB or Mains.
Battery life is pretty good, up to five hours or so.

More than happy to sell you one and help you manage the sim inside it. ;)
DM me if you'd like more detail.
