Hi there,

I recently ported my old Vodacom number to MTN and today someone told me something strange about my number.

Instead of the usual 2782, it starts with 2738

I haven't noticed it before and have no idea how long it's been like this

Also they say, when they call me the line "beeps" several times before it starts ringing...

Seems a bit strange. . . Hmm...

Anyone know anything about this?

Can't be. You sure it's not +2783? In that case they gave you a new number from MTN.

The beeping is normal. It lets the caller know that the number they are calling was ported and is no longer with the original network (henc off net tarrifs might apply for the call)

as for the other 2738 I have no idea.

Just tested it now in the office on someone else's phone and it shows 2782

Maybe the other person just looked wrong and saw the mysterious 3

All ported numbers beep. Telkom to Neotel, Vodacom to CellC. I don't know why this is necessary, unless to warn you that you are contacting "another operator" as Telkom put on their phone invoices
