Hi,

I know this is'nt the right forum, but I'd like if possible to hear from the MTN rep. I initially posted in the Call Contracts forum and the general reply was "Don't port its a massive hassle". Below is the original post, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

My contract is finally up and I'm getting my first taste of MNP. What seemed a really simple process is fast turning into a hassle coupled with a burden. I want to port from Vodacom to MTN - I have been to the Vodashop, the MTN shop, Vodacoms call centre and MTNs call centre and have got 4 different stories - seriously!

Here is my situation: I am on a 24 month Vodacom top up contract that ends in October. I want to upgrade to a full contract (better call rates, benefits, etc.) preferably in October and preferably without paying two operators simultaneously. Nothing fits my student needs as well as MTN MyCall100. I phoned Vodacom to cancel my contract with one months notice and to tell them I want to port - they said before cancelling I should contact MTN to get onto their system (I hate it when people talk about their "systems"!) Anyway I went to MTN and was told that to get onto their "system" I had to create a contract with immediate effect - I was even told that when porting it was impossible not to pay double bills for at least 1 month!

Apologies for the long post - but surely someone here has been through this painful process and emerged victorious. A guide - preferable step by step including numbers to call and fees to pay - would be worth its weight in gold and I for one would be willing to pay (buy some beers for) the person who wrote it.

thanks,
Richard

Porting to MTN

I ported to MTN [iTalk].

The port appears to take place when it is convenient to both MTN & Vodacom. Expect the port to happen slightly after the start of the month: that way both get to charge you for a month's contract fees.

MTN will tell you that have been ported. This, in essence, means that MTN are ready for you. You still have to contact Vodacom to tell them to effect the port from their side!

YOU MUST ALSO TELL VODACOM TO CANCEL YOUR ACCOUNT. Porting doesn't cancel your account - and, unless you cancel your account, they will continue to charge you your monthly contract fee.

My general impression was that Vodacom & MTN are in cahoots with one another, making the experience as painful as possible. That way you won't be tempted to stray too quickly ... 8)

My advice

1. Let Vodacom know that your porting once your contract terminates. (Give notice) but don't cancel the contract.
2. When your contract has expired you sign a contract at an MTN dealer and request a port.

That should cover you from getting any penalty fees and if all goes well your one cintract will cancel as soon as the next 1 takes effect.

Okay,

My port experience one was painless the other painful, Pitbull got an earfull from me about this (if he remembers).

1 - Inform your present SP that you're leaving them in 30 days (after your contract expires)

2 - Sign a contract with your NEW sp, and tell them what day to activate and port your contract.

Make sure your port date is at least a day or two day before your previous contract expires otherwise you'll end up with no phone service and just pop your new sim card in the phone the morning after.

It's does occasionally work... I promise as I've seen it done.
