A Portuguese obstetrician has been suspended after a baby was born without a nose, eyes or part of his skull.
The parents of baby Rodrigo had not been aware of their son's severe physical abnormalities until he was born earlier this month.
Medical council officials have voted to suspend Dr Artur Carvalho over allegations of negligence.
It has emerged that other complaints, dating back more than a decade, have been made involving other babies.

I'm confused - how is he responsible for birth defects?
Sometimes, I read the article to understand the puzzling questions.
The mother then reportedly had a fourth, more detailed, 5D ultrasound at a different clinic while six months pregnant. During that scan the possibility of abnormalities was raised, only for Dr Carvalho to allegedly dismiss concerns.

"He explained that sometimes some parts of the face are not visible (on ultrasounds)... when the baby's face is glued to the belly of the mother," Rodrigo's aunt was quoted by AFP as telling a local broadcaster.

Considering that Portugal is mainly Catholic, chances are that the doctor is too and that he intentionally did not inform the parents who might have wanted to abort.

My next question was going to be -what difference does it make if he said something or not - Catholic country no way those parents were getting an abortion anyway.

She could have travelled elsewhere? Not sure if they allow people to go out of portugal these days though.

His title as doctor is more important than whatever religion he or the town follows.
As a doctor he took an oath.
It is his job to inform parents of possible deformities or problems with their unborn child, whether he or they like it or not.
He is 100% at fault here.

If his religion interferes with him being a doctor, he should not have become one.

Likely the case
It has emerged that other complaints, dating back more than a decade, have been made involving other babies.
Also,
Carvalho has in the past been the subject of four prosecutors' investigations, including one into a similar case in 2011.

On that occasion, Carvalho failed to spot defects developing in a baby girl, and she was later born with no chin, inverted legs, fused toes, and severe brain injuries.

The case was dismissed after it was concluded that the problems would have been hard to spot with routine tests.

The girls's mother, Laura Afonso, told Publico newspaper that her child, now eight, has had to undergo multiple surgeries, but remains unable to speak or walk.

It has been reported that at least six medical complaints dating back to 2013 are currently open against Carvalho, not including the one concerning Rodrigo.
