Possibly random, but regular connection drops

I've experienced random connection drops throughout the day, since this morning. Previously, I was one of the users who's profile had to be modified in order to maintain a connection... (in April I think). The only repetitive behaviour appears to be when my connection is idle for a few minutes and I attempt to connect again (eg. mail polling) then the connection drops. I'm uncertain as to whether this is the only time the connection drops.

Is anyone else in CT, particularly the Rondebosch area experiencing the same problem?

You are not alone - same down here in Fish Hoek

Have you PM'd vodacom3g? I have - hoping for a response.

Absolutely zero help from the Vodacom helpdesk (as has always been my experience, unfortunately) - I tried both 111 and 155. Cannot waste any more time on listening to their hold music, or calling again and again, being placed on hold and eventually being cut-off.

@zoot I must admit been too busy and was hoping it would right itself!

The 155 call back service worked very well for a while but I have noticed that the latest thing is you do get a callback but when you answer it cuts you off! lol Guess they can't deny they did call you back and the message never actually promises anyone will talk to you! lol

Will PM v3g if it doesn't come right in the next couple of hours.

I've had endless connection drops today - especially after the connection has been idle.

Yes, this happens to me whether I call and wait, or request a callback. This has been the case for months now. How is anyone who has experienced the general good service one receives overseas, able to bare this appalling zero-service mentality which is perpetuated here in SA? I will stop now, as complaining always falls on deaf ears.

I've only just managed to get on-line again - the connection would drop within a second or two after authentication.

Thanks vodacom3g - unfortunately it appears to have got worse as the days has progressed. Often have to (re)connect several times before my point is assigned an IP address. Then... the connection drops after a while, as stated before.

Looking forward to this issue being fixed.

I've been having connection problems for 3 days now. let's see what gives tonight.

I can't even get to the authentication part.

It's getting ridiculous now.

Unfortunately there's no change, in fact it's worse. I've just spent 10 minutes retrying until I eventually connected. The times I couldn't, my end of the connection was not assigned an IP address. It's taken 4 (re)connection attempts to send this post! Something's really broken.

This appears to be the exact problem experienced in April (poosibly March?) when 100+ users had to keep the line "alive" by pinging periodically? Although... I had an SSH session open and suddenly I lost data throughput. These appear to be the same symptoms.

Some detail from my PPP logs follow. The IP address assignment takes forever!

I'm trying to connect to GPRS - I get to the point where it tries to "register on the network" and I get booted - PPP, remote computer taking too long.

I connected once but could not go to any sites.

Now dialled up...

Now we're talking.

Thanks v3g but it's been 3.5 days now for me not being able to connect.

Should I PM you next time?

Still no change. The problem lies in the downlink. As said earlier, same symptoms as April.

As long as the link stays active then it stays connected.

using netstat 1 or a ping -t

Yup, connection very iffy. If you get connected and it works weel, keep the connection because you're gonna have to try 10-15 times to re-connect.

Now for some stability...
