Post Office coughs up R3 million with staff on brink of losing medical aid

The South African Post Office (Sapo) has paid over R3 million in overdue contributions to the Medipos medical scheme on behalf of employees who are members of Solidarity.

The payment follows the trade union taking Sapo to court and obtaining an urgent court application for a settlement order to prevent its members from losing their medical aid benefits.

This is exactly why you should never get your medical aid through your employer. Medical aid "benefits" are taxed as gross income so there is actually no benefit to going through your employer for medical aid. You're far better off just getting the money directly and organising your own medical aid directly.

I would sue for stealing, but I have no funds.

Moes gister my pakkie gaan soek in Jet Park. Was seker op die brink van gesteel.

Wish there were a law that prohibits my employer from forcing me to take medical through them.

I think benefits and how they are dispensed are pretty much at the discretion of the employer. It's just a partnership they have with a service provider, like they would have with training, cellphone contracts and other benefits.

Solidarity seems to be the only union who fight these things. Most PO employees aren't solidarity so I wonder what the other union(s) are doing.

They even said they going back to court to fight for the non-solidarity employees, now that they've won their case.

How is/was this allowed to happen.
It's surely fraud and it's not being punished.
It sets a dangerous precedent.
Soon other government entities might follow suit.
On second thought; I think they learnt this from Denel.:(

So it's almost like their medical aid and retirement contributions are still in transit or not in da sistaam.
Shamepies.
