Post Office stops grant payments due to "challenges"

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has warned grant beneficiaries that they will no longer be able to collect cash payouts at South African Post Office (Sapo) branches.

The agency said that cash pay-points at which social grant clients normally access their social grant funding would not be serviced due to challenges "beyond Sassa's control".

"This challenge is extended to post office outlets as well, so clients are advised not to go to any post office branch to try to access the funds," Sassa stated.

Any takers on whether the post office will collapse by the end of the year?

This has been the post office's primary function for the last few years and if they're handing this off it seems likely that the govt is going to take it out back and deal with it.

The queues are crazy for those in line to receive this, scary the number of people queueing, I also wonder what goes through their minds viewing people with FULL trollies of groceries at the tills right next to them.

Viewing the shoppers faces, people try not to glance their way, almost like crossing the street when you see a beggar coming.
It's a sad state.

The only company who wants you to use less of their services. Oh wait, Eskom too....linked to a common shareholder perhaps?!?

My cat gave up being a helicopter pilot, due to challenges.

This is the self-same company that wants to monopolise shipping of packages < 1 kg? LOL!

Sell the Post Office for 15c to the private sector..
No, there are no assets to sell like SAA, so won`t happen. What they should do is add a "postal levy" to all non-indigent households and then give every household 10 gig free telkom lte. This is the socialist SA way and this will keep the PO paying salaries.

I suspect it suits them perfectly that the middle class abandons using them - no noise around their performance anymore, just some random shouting every year at Budget Speech time about taxpayers, but otherwise left in piece.

Should be a pang of guilt since the people with full trollies are the ones paying for their groceries.

It doesn't want to do that. It just wants to keep everything the way it is currently except it insists on getting some fee from the couriers while adding zero value.

Nothing at all goes through their minds, the vast majority of the receipients have full time employment at a small business where they are paid in cash. The R350 is just a bonus, to be squandered.

There is no shame when they use their Sassa cards to buy things like full chicken combos at a franchise I own. Hardly basic a basic need.

Of course Sassa = ANC in their minds and guess where their next vote is going.

From things I overhear (such as them discussing with each other which fields in the form are mandatory, and payment SMSes), I would estimate almost all of my staff collect these grants. If I had to fire them, I would have no staff left.
