Light at the end of the load-shedding tunnel

Eskom and South Africa are on course to resolving the country's electricity crisis, EE Business Intelligence managing director and energy expert Chris Yelland has stated.

Yelland has often been cautionary or given a negative outlook on the future of rotational power cuts in South Africa, making the positive developments he highlighted significant.

This all sounds good on paper! The crux of the matter is that no matter what ESCUM does, the electricity will never get to the consumer as the local authorities have not invested in the infrastructure to deliver the electricity.
Some parts of Kempton Park have been sitting without electricity since 15H00 yesterday! This is the third time in as many weeks that the 88KV cable has failed and still the insist on repairing a 35+ year old cable instead of replacing the aging infrastructure.

Also I don't get the optimism from this guy.

All I see is "we're shutting down a metric fsck-ton of coal power stations in under 10 years" then no other point that seems to address increasing power generation in any meaningful sense.

The only real point I see about increasing generating capacity are these:
  • A significant increase in IPPs due to bid windows 5, 6, and 7 of the renewable energy IPP procurement programme (REIPPP)
  • A gas-to-power procurement programme that will add 3,000MW of capacity to the grid.
3000MW is basically replacing 1 coal power station. It's peanuts considering what needs replacing here. Eskom is talking about decommissioning most of it's coal within 8 years.

Am I missing something? Are they just aiming for the economy to be so destroyed by that point that nobody needs to use electricity anyway?

The moment Chris Yelland sees a light at the end of a tunnel, it is time to stock up on candles then....

We all given up on stable electricity supply, I have started saving up, might not be able to go off grid soon. But I hope to be able to buy a Hubble battery and a 5kw invertor by end of the year or early next year.

That is exactly what happened late in 2007. Eskom announced that, with reserves running lower than 8% in some areas, they would need to implement a blackout schedule – known as load shedding –to prevent crashing the entire national grid. When asked how long this situation would last, the answer was: We don’t know. It could be as long as seven years.

While Molefe still sees a risk of rolling power cuts in the next few years, he expects to complete all aspects of his plan by 2022.

In his response to the 2015 Presidency Budget Vote debate on Tuesday, Zuma said: “the model indicates that demand will exceed supply for the next 24 to 36 months. To increase supply, Eskom is implementing a structured planned maintenance programme to ensure that the availability of all power stations is improved.”

“It is important to recognise that due to the unreliability and unpredictability of the system, the risk of load shedding remains,” he said.

“This will be the reality until after the 18 months of reliability maintenance, which will last until August 2021.

Eskom chief executive Andre de Ruyter says that South Africa will see “significantly reduced” load shedding by September 2021.

Eskom’s plant availability has improved from 69.9% in October last year to 76.3% at the end of April this year. The utility company’s boss Khulu Phasiwe assured that it will keep the lights on for good (2016)

As we begin the long and difficult recovery from the coronavirus pandemic, we can draw encouragement, confidence and hope from the measures we are taking now to address our immediate electricity challenges and secure our energy supply well into the future. ( Cyril Ramaphosa 28 September 2020)
