While I'm as sceptical as the next guy, guys questioning the tech, get over it. It does work it has been deployed elsewhere in the world successfully.

As I understand it it's a last mile technology, and it's not tranmitted across transformers - Fibre runs to the substation and the data hops on the line just to get into the house. So yes, you better firewall any modem you deploy in your house because every other house on your subnet can see you.

GTS need a kick in the pants for staying shtum for so long, but they potentially are in the most powerful position in BB in ZA.

My guess is they're waiting for Neotel to roll their backbone and the opening of the landing point - they couldn't do 20Mb caps without it.

It sounds almost too good to be true.

That's probably because it is, IBIWISI, sick of people just talking about their plans. Lets see some actual implementation for a change.

So what, measure for measure, nothing beats a proper ADSL line in terms of reliability

At least not a Telkom Dsl line. Measure for measure fiber optic would be the best I believe. Nice that the americans are being offered the choice now of connecting via fibrer optic.

I think they're just trolling for investors, but I'd love to be proven wrong.

1m subscribers... stop smoking the bad stuff, Smoking weet-bix is bad for you dude...

Why is this an unreasonable target? More homes in SA have electricity than telephone lines. No additional installation is required - only the modem.

OOOOOh... powerline communications.. Can you say "noise problems", "interference with appliances", "attentuation by transformers", "unreliable links due to Eskom's inefficiency"

These are legitimate concerns. But then again people used to believe that if they made a car that went faster than 60km then people would be killed by the force. I'm sure glad those naysayers were overcome.

At least with every other technology when the power goes out, and you have standby generation you still have service. So now, with SA's already dodgy power supply, when the power goes out, you're really snookered!!! What a load of k a k!

Well if more depends on the power lines then Eskom, the municipalities and the government will be forced to pay better attention and provide the 1st world solution we deserve.

Secondly there is nothing to say that the wealthier amongst us can't have 3G or iBurst as their backup. But when you look at the majority of South Africans, many of who haven't had access to the internet because of the high cost, this is a good thing. Even if the power is down occasionally PLC has far better potential for broadband penetration than any other technology in SA (except maybe the new Wifi tech).

And raise your hands - how many of you have a generator at home? I'm sorry but I'm not amongst the elite of this country, I can't afford a generator, I can't afford a laptop, I can't afford a 3G phone (I'm really pushing my budget having ADSL at all) so when my power is out there is no way I'm accessing the internet anyway.

So what, measure for measure, nothing beats a proper ADSL line in terms of reliability

I haven't had such a good laugh in a long time!! Thx for that comment. You soo work for Telkom.

Yes, very big challenges: SERVICE, DELIVERY and RELIABILITY, things that are scarce in SA.

These points are applicable to ANY service in South Africa. Are you trying to say that we shouldn't have ANY services because it's too much trouble?

What fcking use is faster broadband if you HAVE TELKOM STRANGLING the SAT-3 and 3 GIG CAPS!!!!!

The situation is going to change:
- ICASA is busy accessing which facilities like SAT-3 need to be classed as essential.
- Telkom is busy reassessing what the standard cap should be.
- Neotel seem to have struck a deal.
But no doubt this is part of the reason why GTS have taken longer to launch than expected.

By the way - does anybody know if there are land cables running up to Nigeria? Maybe they are planning to route that way.

Maybe they are planning to send via satellite and receive via SAT-3.

Haven't heard of any of my customers talking about this... Technical model se moer... it will be the same "teething problems" can you say "Sentech MyCrapness" and "IBust" I am not going to subject myself or my customers to that **** again.

For clients that are currently connected and value reliability, I'd say wait and see (as with any new tech).
I am more optimistic about the eventual success of PLC as opposed to the current wireless solutions.

Ahhh... big dreams... ****-all action, the Proudly South African way (TM)

Yeah that's also the South Africa spirit: Sit on your ass and moan and don't do anything about it.

Free of charge... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, there's gotta be some catch. TANSTAAFL dude....
Return of the killer bubbles... can you say i B U R S T!!!

Um what are you going to do with a PLC modem? Let see you could use the modem as an ornament or you can connect to broadband. This just means that they aren't out to screw South Africans in the fly by night fashion that say iBurst has been. It also shows that they have confidence that their technology and service will be good enough to keep their subscribers for a long time. When I signed up for ADSL in the UK I got my ADSL modem free.

Yes it is too good to be true... trickery from yours truly Telkom SA (PTY) LTD

Yes, this is all some underhanded ploy by Telkom. {sarcasm}
No this is the genuine thing (I hope). As hard as it is to believe - there is competition to Telkom. There is a lot a money to be made in South Africa and now it looks like someone with capital to pump in is finally coming to the table.

I for one would jump at this if the price was AFFORDABLE..I need an always on connection at below R200pm and Im sure that would be the sweet spot for many other SAfricans..the majority of other countries have a monthly fee equivalent to about $25-30 for high speed internet..why the hell not us? We deserve it..

You'd think the country's electricity supply would be enough to make them pay attention, if they're not worried about that they won't care about anything.

Its just hard to believe when they keep talking about their grandiose schemes but show no signs of actually doing anything.

Otherwise a big b!tch of a problem is the fact that your gonna interfere with short wave communications, and maybe even radio station broadcasts, but this all depends on your operating frequency.

Ja let them do that and rub the radio hams up the wrong way.

Why is this an unreasonable target?

Because... the SA consumer is tired of being shafted... do you honestly think they're all going to suddenly migrate to some company with no track record?

I get accused of working for Telkom by assholes in this thread. For the record I don't work for the company, I work for myself. It is you who should stop smoking tik/crystal meth or whatever the hell it is you do because if you think the SAT-3 is going to be liberated from Telkom you must really dream on. Telkom will put up one hell of a fight. And don't mention Neotel, they're just another Cell-C

You should know by now that you cannot force anyone/anything in this country to do anything they don't want to do!

Well it's not our fault you're pushing the budget with ADSL, there are cheaper alternatives.

To my ignore list you go...

From http://www.goal.co.za/

GTS Broadband

If you fall into our coverage area, why not get connected.
GTS Broadband will initially include:

a connection to our network via your power socket at 512ADSL equivalent speeds
a free Broadband Over Power modem to allow you to connect
an ISP service with a 5 Gig capped limit along with email
and the ability to subscribe to our other awesome services like IP TV soon to be launched!
All this for R479 including VAT per month on a 12 month contract!

And remember that’s for the connection fee and the ISP services with a 5 Gig limit!

In your area? You can sign up soon!

Telephony

For an extra R97 you can get a telephone line with an analogue interface so you can connect a fax machine or your trusty analogue portable phone. And you get savings of around 15% on local calls and up to 40% savings on international calls! That’s also available on a 12 month contract and includes VAT.

Ok now I'm not exited, nor impressed. Another rip SA a bigger one offer... I think we can accept to get the same kind of "affordable" offerings from NeoTel...you are right - Cell C ring a bell:eek:

More expensive if you are currently on a Closer 4 or 5 package.

When will these people figure out that the magical number is R200?

I like the way redheadfan thinks.

We are getting shafted by telkom we all know that, but as some will point out telkom would put up a fight when the local loop etcetc becomes unbundled, but thats up to the government. So if say ICASA decides that the local loop has to be unbundled how is telkom gonna stop them? Is telkom gonna go and steal/cut the cables in the night? Are they gonna stick out their tongues to neotel and say "nyah, nyah we have control".

Pfff - its like that add about the 2010 soccer world cup where the aussie rips the SA guy standing in the airport queue - I love that add because imho stop f3cking moaning and do something about it. And yesyes blahblah free speech but geez - why not emigrate if **** is so bad? Go to the U.S. where ur children learn gun handling 101 in school, go to australia where racism against aboriginees is twice as bad as racism here, go to london where u have absolutely f'oll sun.

Geez that grass is looking very green...

It seems only the people on this forum understand what really has to be done to sort out this whole broadband mess we're in. Im starting to think the only way we can get the product we want at the price we want is to start our own MyADSL telecommunications company..other than that we can just continue READING about whats coming 'soon'...*sigh* we all luv this country but why the hell is it so hard for people (govt) to understand that EVERYONE will benefit if they stop topping up their pockets..*double sigh*
