The direct route from SA to Aus goes far from land over the southern Indian Ocean. Only a 4-engined jet such as the A380 is certified to make such a flight.

We were wondering about that, presume it's also jet streams found that suits the need. With the 747-400 (in 2002) they used quite a different route which headed almost directly towards Perth, then changed just off the coast to go across the whole Ozzie Bight.

BTW, anyone wanting to convert miles to km - change English-US to English-Oz at the bottom of the live page.
 
Wth rise of extreme ETOPS, twin engines can do it. Before Qantas changed to the A380 on the route last year, they were using their 787s on the route.
SAA wants to move from the A340 on the route to the A330, quad jets just don't have the economy.
