Poweralert Stage 3 (old news)

People have to first understand.
Eskom itself will add a total of 739MW of battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity in the next three years, with a further nearly 2 900MW of BESS, photovoltaic solar and wind capacity in 2028 and 2029.
This is not the same as coal or nuclear plants capacity. So basically they are adding about 750MW maybe

To my thinking, they've at least made the commitment now, and being an intensely proud group that may be enough.

But who knows what it will end up costing us in diesel.

There's not that much diesel power, there is at most 2400MW

We should just ignore anything Eskom adds.

I would be too, but even though I don't have your and Lupus' knowledge have to at least admit they've somehow, weirdly, pulled it off the last few months. It's amazing...
I'm sure we will see bouts of loadshedding again waaaay before 2029.

If it's renewables... Unless it's 60 or 70GW sure. Cause at the end of the day anything as small fry as they are adding now will bring us back to LS during peaks or low wind/solar events. Cause we don't have the "base" to hold us up if we need it. Unlike say Germany or South Australia

Eskom can't build anything on time or on budget therefore they wont build anything meaningful so we can safely just ignore their "good stories" from now on.

Imagine Eskom building 70GW of renewables!

Yet... the lights stay on

(Just being the devil's advocate here.)
For how many days?

There are 1800 days to 2029. All it takes is some wet coal, mist and jelly fish at the same and then BOOM! Loadshitting.

Now for the other side of the coin - individual area problems.

My brother lives in Linksfield Ridge, northern Jo'burg. I've just heard yesterday that they've been having power cuts similar to loadshedding on a daily basis as their substation is on the edge. He says it's usually worse than the attempt to schedule it.
