Does this mean that if I win, say R100k, by playing via the ABSA app, I will not get notified by the app and should check the numbers myself?
ABSA is likely to give notice. I believe they will call you when you win more than R50,000, and also send an SMS, to instruct you on how to make the claim. They won't process the winnings themselves.

ABSA:

https://www.absa.co.za/ways-to-bank/cross-channel-and-messaging-services/lotto/#accordion-content-389010688-4
  • The bank will send you an SMS of the winnings within 2 business days after the draw.
  • The current SMS only contains: reference number, when winning will be paid, ABSA contact number.
  • The bank will pay winnings into the players account if the winning is ≤R50000.
Notification and claiming of winnings >R50000 should be managed as follows:
  • The bank will send you an SMS of the winnings within 2 business days after the draw.
  • The current SMS contains: reference number, draw date, instructions to Ithuba, Ithuba contact number, instruction on what documents to have when visiting Ithuba.
  • Go to the Ithuba office with the following information:
  • 1-month bank statement Reference number
  • ID document

Limpopo won again..

Must be the luckiest province.. that and buying in store as I’ve not seen an eChannel win the prize.

Imagine receiving an SMS from the bank informing you that you've won R70 million in the Lotto? This is exactly what happened to one extremely lucky Gauteng resident.

The man, who prefers to remain anonymous, says he's a regular Lotto player who started when the Lotto commenced 18 years ago.

"At the time, I wasn't regular, I didn't want to stand in queues but when you could play the lotto through FNB, it became easier," he says.

Over the years, the largest amount he'd ever won playing the lotto was R1 300, which he says was only last year. Perhaps this was the prelude to his next big win.

Just like he does every week, he spent R240 on his Quick Pick tickets through the FNB banking app on the January 12th draw.

The next day, he received an SMS from the bank.

'Is this not a scam?'

"I heard two messages coming in, one after the other, so I thought, 'Argh, it's a please call me'. I didn't even pay attention to it," he says.

When he finally did check his messages, the SMS read, 'You're the first tier winner of Powerball/Powerball Plus. An agent will contact you within two working days.'
Aside from that I have read that someone else had won it by playing directly on their site.

If it's above R50K they should phone you, FNB does.
My buddy was telling me earlier that he played powerball yesterday on the Std Bank app. This morning he got a SMS to say that his winnings will be transferred into his account. He know that it was thus below 50K, but the SMS didn't say how much he had won. He had to check the numbers and in the end it was just 15 bucks.

Well currently with my luck and algorithm for every R1000 he will be guaranteed R5 cash back
You are generous. He just needs to pretend to be a car guard for an hour and he will make more than that

Does anybody think lotto quickpick especially on fnb app is rigged to give poor results? I always cant help but feel back in my mind i should rather be playing my own set of the same numbers every time instead of just quickly hitting the gool ol quickpick

I get this feeling as well.
Has any bank app player won big?
Seems like only the physical ticket buyers win

I play weekly through the FNB app and I can agree to some extend yes.
The most I have won through the app was about R800, and I only play Quickpick.

I think folks are being a bit paranoid. Quick pick is just a random generator.

Now with the draw being randomized electronically and not mechanically, could there be a seed\payout algorithm.....sure but I suspect its the same as any other statistic in this country, the majority of lotto tickets are purchased over the counter vs e-sales.

Fyi, casino chains were similar a few years ago. There are multi banks of machines in a casino and across casinos that control certain jackpots and there is a mandatory payout ratio. The only way for the casino to ensure the high jackpots and profit is by increasing the pool with more machines, thus reducing individual chance. That ratio is strictly monitored by the gambling boards.

There was an investigation once for the Million Rand slot machine ( those old folks who remember the craze back then ). The machine was quite heavily mechanical although there was still some seeding done but in the one casino, it was won three times in the space of a week. That raised some serious eyebrows as the jackpot was across all the banks of machines across the country. In the end, it was proven to be just random though.

Standard Bank Lotto Quick pick numbers are terrible.

They repeat the same numbers often. Frustrating. Yes, I know its random, but pisses me off when I don't get a good spread of numbers.

So now what I do is pick my own numbers and make sure I spread it over the full 1-52 range.

Please send us some examples, interesting to see what you are complaining about.

Remember, the numbers are random and not always "spread" over the full range. Take some of tonight's numbers for example
Lotto Plus 2 … 9, 10, 12, 13, 22, 42 and 5
Lotto Plus 1 … 20, 26, 35, 43, 44, 46 and 34
