Powership contract will cost South Africa R218 billion - CSIR

R450 billion in debt. Add another R200+ billion. That de Ruyter really is a great businessman.

Power ships are also heavy air polluters (I’ve read 2 EIA reports one specifically for Richards Bay) and I suspect there will be environmental challenges to these, else the air quality in Port Elizabeth (Coega) and Richards Bay will severely impacted.

Should be fine, considering the amounts of air pollution produced by informal settlements.

It does seem overpriced but if they can provide electricity immediately it will be good for the economy. The cost of load shedding for small and medium business alone is quite a bit. The corruption is the biggest concern.

I've got no issue at all with the idea of bringing in these power ships to plug the hole in our generation capability, but a 20 year contract...that's a tad concerning.
I agree sketchy as ****. It's like an addict saying give me 20 years to get sober.

10.9 billion a year over 20 years, I worked it out to 1.27 per kWh excluding fuel and transmission @ availability of 80%, how this makes sense?????

A comparison to other solutions would have been nice. Still looks horribly expensive and dirty to boot.

We need 10 GW, that's the problem.

Anyway, this is sort of OK, I guess. The problem with the ANC is that they are so corrupt that they are constantly thinking ways to loot state coffers, so all the solutions that actually make it, are reactions based on a present crisis. They cannot plan ahead and implement because of endemic corruption in their ranks. So, I'll take this, but it is by no means the best solution.

Was this not a Department of Mineral Resources and Energy decision?
No idea. I just assumed an electricity thing is Eskom. If the department took the decision, is the department paying for it too?
