PPPoE vs USB speeds

Just had a thought... (so early in the morning)

I'm getting OK (sometimes very OK) performance off Mintech, and yet other guys are getting cr@ppy speeds of the same tower. Any chance it has something to do with the usb drivers or usb interface in the modem? I only used usb for about a day, while I was setting up my smoothwall.

Any PPPoE users getting really bad speeds on the 256 package on Mintech?

Well according to Powerband the Ethernet is faster than the USB in data through put. Although the difference is something like 1MB to 100MB. Not something that would actually slow your connection down.

Fantom, my thinking was that the usb driver may be buggy and causing higher packet loss or something...

There goes that theory. Hey, I tried. Better just wait. Only a few days to go before all will be revealed...

Rule number 1 that I have learn't, never assume a problem to be your own when dealing with Sentech, its always them. ethernet/usb will make little difference in the connection. In regards to packet loss, its definitely not got anything to do with the interface.

Well, I am on Mintek, 256k package, and I would define speeds of between 29kbps and 55kbps as being 'lousy'. Plus I have the same setup - Smoothwall and PPPoE. I must say though - just to confuse the issue - I have 0% packet loss for the past couple of days (and since then my speed tests have shown a deterioration). Average ping time of 425ms - and yes, this is to Sentech themselves.

I iz confused - yeah, yeah, I know, general state of mind that.

It's sad really.

There was a time when one could regularly get pings sub 100ms (ave) to Sentech .. nor averages are mid 300ms ....

Sad Sad sad

I agree that the problem is always with them. If it works fine for a defined period and then suddenly not - even though you changed nothing - blame them. Theres nothing you can do if the network is belly up with low speed/high PL and latency etc. I mean I have had times where I can download at 15KB/sec and browse quite comfortably (with no DNS misses or missing images) then other times I click a link and nothing happens (while not downloading). My setup and conditions remain constant...
