Prasa no longer keen on train carriages just for women, children in Cape

Cape Town – A year after the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) chairperson promised to set aside women-and-children-only train carriages on Cape Town’s Metrorail, the project appears to have been abandoned, GroundUp reports.

In an interview with GroundUp in June 2018, recently appointed chairperson Khanyisile Kweyama committed to implementing coaches for women and children.

“I said I will sponsor that type of project. In Women’s Month we will sign terms of reference that say this is how we are going to proceed to implement,” Kweyama said.

In a May 2018 meeting between civil society group #UniteBehind and Kweyama, she apparently made the same commitment: to personally oversee the implementation of the new carriages by August 2018.

At the time #UniteBehind told GroundUp that the organisation was excited about this potential improvement for commuter safety on Metrorail.

In Japan there are "women only" coaches on the Tokyo subway system. It works there, but of course its Japan where everything works

I doubt that the Japanese are particularly proud of the reasons why those were introduced - to combat lewd conduct, particularly groping. So yes, the Japanese were groping rather too well.

My sister in law who lives in Jhb has seen plenty of lewd conduct on the Gautrain. One woman started shrieking, saying "take your fo**ing hands off me" in a crowded carriage.

Same on the London underground. Some men cannot control themselves

Ladies only carriages are a standard in India too, has been for decades. In fact the local trains in Mumbai also have "Ladies special" trains(the whole train is ladies only) running during peak hours.

That's sexist

Ja, don't try to fix and issue, just continue as if there is no issue, Mila drives with her handbag right there on the passenger seat, there is no issue with smash and grabs, so no need to do anything different, amirite?

I don’t, its not a men’s issue its a criminal issue. What about the men that are also targeted? What about woman that target woman?Make a criminal only carriage it might work better.

you do not address the problem in this country by separating men and woman.

If it makes women more comfortable to use the train and make use of public transport, then its useful

No problem on buses as far as I know. Neighbour travels daily to and from Mowbray on the bus and has had no issues in 12 years. Buses on time, fairly clean. She recognises many of the female passengers and they are often able to keep her a seat

Damn, missed a tender rigging opportunity
You mean T"(ransg)ender" don't you? They also deserve to be treated with their own carriage.....in fact each identity group should have its own

If they have gender-specific trains/coaches why not race-specific ones too? What's the difference?

Can it be? A stupid idea canned before billions are wasted on it?
Why is it a stupid idea? Women with handbags are targeted by criminals. It shouldn't cost a lot to stick a female(like you find on toilets) sticker on a few train carriages.

If it was one of those islamic countries coming up with this suggestion people would be up in arms.

Just have X number of higher fare carriages per train and then allow women and children to travel on those for the standard fare.
