That Tipo seems like the best value for money as it seems like a lot of car for the money.

But I suppose the Polo is the populist choice in this list.

I'll forever maintain: a good Golf V GTI for about the same money is a much better buy in all ways than these newish cars for R200 000.

on what factors are you saying this?
More space, better performance, looks better (personal opinion), and stronger resale value (unless maybe you get a VW).

Tech its a bit weak possibly, but nothing a good aftermarket radio unit can't fix.

okay yeah probably agree on those points, but if someone is looking at 200k they gonna be looking fuel economy, reliability etc how does it stack up on that?

Fuel economy definitely not as good as these new R200k options.

Reliability, who knows? But without getting into it, I do understand what you mean in terms of reliability.

Either way (for me anyway), I am taking no brand new Picanto or Kwid or Aygo over that Golf V for similar money.

How about a 2nd hand Vivo or Polo that is newer than the GTi?

We need to listen to elders a little bit more, buying an old German performance car is not what you want to do with your money, especially when you are not rolling in cash.

If you have R200K and you want something that is not too slow yet has decent reliability you go for a Honda Jazz Sport, it will immediately set you apart from all the mediocrity while not having to worry that it will go into limp mode at the second stop sign.

Suzuki Swift Sport, previous Gen.
Corsa 1.4T or Astra, even the 1.6T
Mazda 3 Astina, pervious gen
Cerato Koup 1.6T

Something along those lines, it doesn't have to be a donkey, like the current crop of 1.2s being churned out but there's no need to invite trouble into your life by going to the upper end of older performance cars.

The EA113 engine in the Mk5 GTi was pretty heavy, but you could get around 8l/100km on the open road and 11l/100km in town if you were careful with the noise pedal.

Common failures of this engine was the HPFP cam follower which needed frequent replacement, the coolant flange would leak and failed valve covers were also pretty common. Carbon buildup was also an issue.

They are all easy fixes though.

The Golf 5 GTI is heavy on fuel, most have been modded and raced to death.

A Honda Jazz has kept value even 2nd hand and since most driven by sensible grannies, they have been better looked after.

Besides the sport a man driving a Hoda Jazz looks odd, unless you are like 70 yo or has really given up.

Besides being reliable there is really not much going on for the Jazz, the newer Indian built one's quality has gone down and the 1.2l engine is the worst thing ever.

No disputing or arguing. But I stated a good one. Not just any typical modded thing which has the R32 twin exhausts in the middle.

Something clean, unmodded, full service history with everything working. You can get those for an extra few 10 thousands.

Honda Jazz Sport? The one which looks like an MPV?

You forget VW locks all tend to go too.

I had a Golf 4 long ago, happiest day I got rid of it. Golf 5 is equally heavy on fuel.

Rather get a Polo 1.4 with all the extras. My friend did exactly that. Cost her new R230k, but low on fuel, low on maintenance, leather seats, sunroof, the works.

Or you could go for something like this (maybe not the colour leather inside). But its heckuva low on fuel...

I know of many people with the older Polo TDI (even the round light ones)

But these are the lowest on fuel you can get... Costly though.

3.1 litre in the countryside compared to 8l for the Golf GTI. Its a no brainer.

But if you want style and luxury, rather the Volvo V40 Diesel. Its 4.3l per 100kms.

The Jazz Sport is only if you want a GTI equivalent. I would rather opt for the normal Jazz or Executive model.
