Hello

So my SO parents are building a cottage for us there current property. I went with this as housing choice as most flats does not have telkom infrastructure ,adsl is a must have for me.

Anyway the main house gets electricity direct from ESKOM ,city of cape town does not service this area . This is not prepaid.

Now we want to get a prepaid meter installed in the cottage for us so that I can get 15% back in ebucks .SO parents also want this then there will be no issues to sort out of the bill etc.

So is it possible to get a prepaid meter that runs from the main source ?

Basically we want a prepaid meter in the cottage and the main house needs to stay on eskom none prepaid.

I don't think so, because then the main house meter will also pick up your usage. They will probably have to split the incoming supply before the main house, and take another feed to the cottage and install a prepaid meter there. I don't know if Eskom will allow this on one property, you can ask them. Alternatively you can install a normal usage meter for the cottage, and pay your SO's parents at the same rate they pay for electricity based on your usage?

I want my own prepayment meter(s).

Eskom does not normally provide more than one installation per dwelling but some customers would like additional meters for tenants, flats or holiday camps/homes to enable them to charge occupants for their individual electricity usage. In this case you will have to purchase your own prepayment meters directly from the meter manufacturers and also arrange to get pre-coded electricity tokens from the same manufacturer.
Note: You will then have to arrange with an electrician to install these meters for you on your own reticulations system in the house behind your existing meter. The prepayment meter will not replace your existing meter and Eskom will still use your existing meter for your electricity supply.
You will not be able to purchase your electricity tokens from Eskom for this new meter and you must arrange with the meter manufacturer to also provide you with a number of pre-coded electricity tokens for selected amounts. You can then use or sell these pre-coded tokens to tenants as required.

Sounds like a mission, and you would still be paying your SO's parents. Rather have a normal usage meter installed and pay them based on the usage. Or find out if Eskom will allow two supplies on one property (for the ebucks). Or have them get a prepaid meter which you pay with your ebucks discount and they pay you back their portion? Probably too much hassle...

Yeah sounds like mission .SO mom has a pamphlet that she got from okvango lighting they apparently offer this service ,the install of the meter etc

Need to have a look at the pamphlet still ,but pretty sure it wont work in this situation.

The easiest way will be if they can split the incoming feed before the main house. The your SO's parents still pay their bill based on their meter and you can use your prepaid meter. I don't know if this is allowed for one property though. Maybe give Eskom a call?

Eskom won't do this, they will bill the property from a main meter, any submetering done on the property is for the property owner to manage.

Yes - you can install a private pre-paid meter.

You privately buy the meter, manage it privately (or outsource the management of it at a fee), and you (the tenant) purchase electricity via normal outlets (PnP / Bank Deposits / etc). There's numerous private vendors offering this service. The company operating the meter, then pays out whatever electricity you (the tenant) purchased, to your parents (the meter owners).

It's used very often as a private outsourced management structure at shared dwellings such as flats, and even private residential housing complexes.

http://www.prepaidmeters.co.za/ is just one of many (but the one I use for my granny flat that I'm leasing out).

There is AFAIK only 2 ways you are going to get Eskom to split the supply. Either register the property as a sectional title with 2 units (might be zoning issue) or sub-divide the stand into 2 separate stands (depending on regs according to property sizes). In short, a moerse hassle, might take up to a year, will cost at least 100k.

Just go to AC/DC and buy a prepaid meter and install after your parents DB board. Get them to issue you tokens at whatever rate they prefer. Third party vendors will rob you blind in fees and higher tarifs.

That was my suggestion as well. I think the problem is OP wants to use his ebucks to get a discount on the prepaid rate. Only easy way to do this is to convert the main house to prepaid and have them repay you.
