Maybe I'm optimistic but I just can't see it happening. If you run on a generator and suddenly something draws too much power are you going to leave it for the over load protection to switch everything off or are you going to switch as much stuff as you can off quickly?

I would imagine Eskom would do the same. They will just cut bulk supply without notice. I don't think 30 power generating units can fail at once even if like 6 fail the same time it means the others will pull very heavy load. They won't all trip the same time.

It has happened in other countries before, what makes us so special that it can't happen here? A power grid is a large and complex thing and high voltage electricity is difficult to deal with at the best of times, a large imbalance in the system and things can easily go pear shaped very very fast, with things seemingly failing all over the place all it takes is some 'bad luck' and the wrong things to break at the wrong time...

This is not to say that I think it is going to happen, but to discount the possibility is silly, especially given the complete lack of transparency and competency that we are seeing, and the continued influence of politics where it does not belong.
