My advice is whitelisting :
Set the default SMS ringtone to none/off/silent. Then set the ringtone for people in your addressbook to your old SMS ringtone. Android has several apps for this. I'm sure many other phones can also do it.

Or its spam.

Haven't got a personal sms in yonks, even then it was because that person didn't have a smartphone yet.

If you need to contact a large group of diverse people quickly, SMS is the only way.

The only time I make use of SMS, when entering competitions but for communication whatsapp & wechat.

Back in the day SMSs were popular highly doubt they popular now days.
