Prescription Lenses replacement cost??

Hi all,
I accidentally scratched my clear plastic spectacle lenses the other day so need to have them replaced, frame is fine. I have a moderately high degree of astigmatism.
Went in and they are charging me R2200 for the two lenses - I was a bit shocked! Should I be? Nothing fancy, no tints, no colours, no shading, nada. No special mount either.
I wonder, with such a massive industry such as this why the cost of manufacturing these simple plastic lenses is so high?
Thanks!
S

going to be pricey, thats why its better to try and find a nice special from spec savers and go in on that.

or try get yourself another frame and lenses as a spare should things like this happen.

Lens are ridiculous. You get dirt cheap and ridiculous. No inbetween. My last pair cost me just short of R4k just for the lenses.

Did they put anti reflective? That seems to be pricey too.

The biggest cost for my glasses is the thinning of the lenses. Just ordered a new pair and total was R10k, discounted to just over R5k from SpecSavers. The two new lenses came to roughly R4k.

An insurance against damage was costed into my specs from Spec savers about 1.5 years ago, not that I've ever tried to claim.

I had a scratched lens about a year old and they replaced it. I had to pay in R500 out of +- R2500.

Try Spectacle Warehouse.
They run promotions where you can get prescription sunglasses as well.

You will be shocked at the profit margins on lenses. Optics market has become very lucrative.

Go to just about any mall, you will find 2 to 3 Optical Stored / Opticians.

It all depends on how much you rely on your glasses as to how much it is worth spending on lenses (provided money isn't a huge issue). I put my glasses on first thing in the morning and they more or less stay on all day except when I am driving, bathing etc. They are multifocals and I wanted ones with a wide field of vision (whatever the term is). In cheap multifocals this is much narrower. I got them in mid 2014 with the anti-glare, anti-scratch etc, and my ophthalmologist says they are still fine, so I don't regret spending money on good lenses. If I only used them for part of the time, I might well feel differently.
