I thought that the Ginwala report found that he was fit to hold office, on what is this decision based, then

Although it exonerated Pikoli, I also heard of the following findings:

- Pikoli was lax in his handling of security clearance issues
- Pikoli gave former Scorpions boss Leonard McCarthy too much freedom
- Rejection of Pikoli's assertion that former president Thabo Mbeki suspended him to stymie the investigation into police National Commissioner Jackie Selebi

Motlanthe says

"However, it should be noted that the requisite skills would necessarily include professional competence as well as those outlined by the inquiry, in particular appreciation for and sensitivity to matters of national security."

Maybe his wife's rumoured affiliation with COPE had something to do with [-]Motlanthe's[/-] the ANC's decision?

The ANC reaffirms it lack of commitment to fighting organized crime.

What is a greater threat to national security. a police boss on the take from the mob or an NPA that can carry out its mandate and bring those who actively work to undermine law and order in South Africa to trial, without fear of political or other interference?

Seems the ANC likes the corrupt cop option best. Same as travelgate, arms deal, etc.
Whistleblowers and those that take a stand get binned.

Lets have a Viva!

Astonishing.

This is the reason we need an independent body to appoint the NPA.

From another article:

Delivering a lecture at the University of Cape Town, Pikoli said there was a need for the power to appoint the head of the National Prosecuting Authority to be moved away from the executive - to eliminate any doubts over the appointee's independence.

"That will guarantee the full independence of prosecutors," he said.

Since prosecutors had a duty to prosecute all forms of corruption, including that where senior politicians could be involved, there was a need for them to be appointed in a transparent manner.
