President Ramaphosa sheds light on South Africa's COVID-19 vaccination programme

President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that government will deploy a comprehensive vaccination strategy that aims to reach all parts of the country.

Addressing the nation on Monday on the country’s progress in containing the COVID-19 pandemic, the President described the task as the “largest and most complex logistical undertaking in our country’s history”.

As of this week, South African has recorded over 1.2 million COVID-19 infections and 33 000 related deaths. The country is currently experiencing its second wave of infections.

Should we start taking bets that they will implement a booking system like Enatis in order to book your vaccine slot.

So you can book a slot 6 months from now to stand in line to get an actual date you might receive your vaccination.

Most of his speech last night was about GBV instead of the usual Covid...

And even then its the standard misrepresentation of what GBV actually is, or at the very least its a very narrow and gender skewed reading of what GBV is.

I feel as a white person I have to apologise for that, apparently something about calling them names & the natural order of things obliges blacks to hit their wives..

So is there any option of getting your vaccine supplied by the private sector (via medical aid, for instance) or is gov'ment keeping the monopoly on vaccines and you as taxpayer will "get it when we decide"?

Government will be the single purchaser for the country.
Then it gets complicated.

Well, at least they know how to dish out KFC and t-shirts when it's election time. I am afraid, I'm not their target market for that or the vaccine.

Why do I get this hopeless feeling welling up inside all of a sudden?

Let's fly to Israel and get vaxxed there.... cause these ZA fktards will make it impossible for us to get vaxxed here in the next 12 months, while places like Korea and the UK aim to have 100% of the population covered by November.

I liked the part where he said they will use the full resources of government to procure and rollout the vaccine. This bunch of thieving twats can't collectively find a grain of sand on a beach.
For those of us vaccine sceptics it's great news. It'll be years before anyone here is vaccinated and by then we'll have seen the effects on the rest of the world.

The vaccine is coming. I even understand feeling that it's rushed. But between choosing to take the shot and hopefully protect those around me, and not take the shot, well, I'll take a leap of faith and get the jab. No short-term issues have come out of any of the trials, and in regards to long-term, well, I guess I'll see how it pans out.

I mean, in regards to long term risks, I drink coke zero and that's packed with so many chemicals that it will probably kill me long before any potential side effects from the vaccine.

I will happily donate my vaccine to a needy politician, or if it's already tested on them and they survive, then a healthcare worker.

Gov sources it, your medical aid will cover administering to you at your normal service provider.. this could be clicks/dischem/doctor(on network crap) etc or at public sector facilities. This is based on what’s mentioned by medical aids & health dept.

It that’s at best 2 months away due to managing distribution accordingly ethical and risk factors

There is some big issues coming for wealthy nations wrt vaccine procurement vs a global pandemic. As I keep pointing out the past west is best and the rest are subservient isn’t working as democracy pushed is coming full circle and people are questioning the power dynamics

The SA & UK variant mutated separately due to environmental factors and while we know about because these two are the rare countries that do sequencing of viruses in the wild in an open source manner, there is a lot of suspicion there are others out there which are similar or worse.

If you consider that wealthy nations are now having issues distributing & convincing nation to take it while buying up global supply chain and enforcing at profit IP preventing faster manufacture too you have to wonder if this is like the climate crisis.. ie we watching the west screw itself over. Mind you, SA can’t do squats with Pfizer & Modern types (mRNA) ones due to storage & distrib requirements. Ie based on approved & regulated vaccine distrib, the earliest we could have started was in the last 1-2 weeks ago.

Let’s not forget it was barely 6m ago when people claimed it was all good and that mutations are generally weaker despite news of variants being found in the UK which modified the spike protein.. yes, they knew about it a lot longer that dec. they just figured it wasn’t a concern..
