President Ramaphosa wants lower wages to help revive economy

South Africa’s government sought a series of commitments by labour unions and business, ranging from lower entry-level wages to an agreement to boost investment, as part of a plan to revive the nation’s struggling economy.

The proposals angered both parties because they contain stipulations they aren’t willing to meet and want the government to do more to confront immediate problems such as power outages and state corruption, according to people familiar with the matter who asked not to be identified because the talks are private.

Ramaphosa approved salary increases the other day. How is he expecting the ordinary person to take a pay cut?

I mean...

Responding to the public outcry, Parliament spokesperson Moloto Mothapo said that it was important that public representatives were fairly remunerated consistent with their responsibilities under the Constitution.

This isn't going to slide by the Unions. Let's not talk about Ramaphosa's, "historic", minimum wage increases. You can't turn back the clock on these matters. Pandora's box has been opened.

They have to. They have been warned about minimum wage increases over the years. At some point your economy will die. There is no way getting around it. Companies and private individuals will simply stop employing these people or make use of their services. It will have a dramatic effect on unemployment figures.

Well, it is here now. There is nothing that can be done. They should rather have focused on inflation and living costs, which they did not do. Not even with lowered wages, there is no way companies or private individuals can afford employing more people due to extreme living costs in SA.

Probably better to just scrap all the employment and related company red tape and regulations for small businesses rather than addressing wages.

never going to happen,
piggies dont want the trough to empty out,

this is yet another useless measure by incompetants in power, almost like renaming things to show some sort of progress.

To be fair that was a 3% increase.

If that's what the unions were asking for nobody would be freaking out.

Not going to help at all. Living costs are too high. Inflation is too high. Companies struggle under these conditions. No way they can employ more people.

What needed to be done early on was never done. There are no solutions to this problem. This is it. Now the country is in free-fall and we all can buckle-up and see where it all ends.
