Hi guys

I think you guys might be interested in the press release from Sentech about the improvements to the MyWireless service. I have published it in the news section on our main page (http://www.myadsl.co.za for those who links directly to the forum).

Regards,

"When Sentech first rolled out the MyWireless product, the contention ratio on any of the three packages was 30:1, later reduced to 15:1. The immediate goal is to reduce this across all packages to a ratio of 4:1 for local Internet access bandwidth. International access bandwidth cannot be guaranteed and is, therefore, still regarded as best-effort access. "

Since when is "Best-effort" the same as "Hard cap"??

Also, why is it neccessary to have contention on local BW? Local BW is cheap.

"These data volumes are measured on a monthly basis. However, Sentech will not automatically reduce the available bandwidth when these limits are reached. Customers consistently exceeding the expected usage of their specific packages are contacted individually. Should their usage trend continue, they will be advised to migrate to a higher package.
"

WTF does that mean?

We will reduce your speeds?
We will force you onto a larger package?

WTF?

Whats the difference between a hard and a soft cap? They both result in the same thing as far as I can see ... you get throttled or you are forced to pay more.

Sounds like Sentech is capping pure and simple.

Notice how there is no claim to fix int bandwith?

1:4 local contension ... whoopee ding ... local is cheap as shyte anyway so who gives a toss.

Thanks rpm!

That's a very cute statement, only they forget to mention that one of the mindless poephols forgot to uncheck the "Cap eveyone's international bandwidth at 5K" knoppie

LOL

I like how the press release is written by someone possibly drunk and definately steeped in denial.

Maybe the ex-Iraqi minister of information is the head of sentech public relations. We could burn down all their main towers and they'll deliver a nice steaming press release NO EVERYTHING IS FINE! REALLY! IN FACT, IT'S BETTER NOW!

There is only one way to interpret this - 'Your transfer rate wil be capped/shaped/f**cked and we will enforce this by any means possible'

Again, my service was great before this sh*te.

Sorry I am annoyed. [xx(]

This press release *proves* that MyWireless is NOT a "broadband" service.

quote:
When Sentech first rolled out the MyWireless product, the contention ratio on any of the three packages was 30:1, later reduced to 15:1. What they are saying is that "shared 128" is actually 128k/4 = 32k
"shared 512k" becomes 512k/4=128k

The minimum speed for broadband is 128k, so therefore "Enter the Sentech Broadband Zone" actually means nothing, especially since their *target* is 4:1, and they haven't actually reached it yet.

"Uncapped" means "soft capped" whatever that means.

"uncapped" means "Bandwidth management" i.e. "throttled". It's not a cap in the ADSL sense of the word: it's more like they've put the brakes on so that it is physically impossible to download any large files because it just takes too long. That's why you need a 24 hour connection, because everything just takes too long.

I hope "Wilson Smith" is reading this. If I were him I would be even more embarassed than the lawyers at Adams & Adams.

I am on 256k package which actually is a 128k package running at 64k. Anycase - Are they gonna distinguish between 20GB a month local and 20GB a month international dl's - these two don't cost the same - So for the same price of the international dl's I can dl 4 times more locally which equites to 80GB if I can get that? How will they monitor this? This is really absurd. Is there any IT or internet experts working for Sentech?!? Where's DW?

So ultimately Sentech should stop advertising their product as uncapped broadband. 6kb/sec is not broadband. And a soft cap is not an uncapped service. They really should drop their pricing drastically because all they're then offering (with some exceptions) is a 24/7 connection at dial-up speeds, which should cost around R300 per month.

He's a marketing / management of small group - type... not technical at all - then again - back in the day, neither was I really. But he didn't seem inclined. Don't expect input from he or the bunch surrounding InfoSat procurement. The InfoSat procurement of Sentech's was a White Rabbit as far as management personnel is concerned. They just gained two rather well self-studied Linux personel. (Notice self-studied - these two guys may be the silent saving grace of the whole thing and end up being the unsung heroes if they're able to fix all the broken ****e).
