From my place last week, while the dude from telkom was telling me that the LTE signal is not that great ...
How did the dude do the test ?
With a fixed-wireless router (like a B593, or B315), or a USB stick modem ?
Using just the device's antennas from inside the house, or from up on the roof; or using an external antenna up on the roof ?
The signal conditions up on the roof (with a good antenna) will be vastly different to using internal antennas inside the house.

My problem is the consumption of data in the household, Netlfix, Hulu, live streaming average about 300gigs a month. Can't do that anymore, had to reconnect DSTV for now.
Yup, compared to biggest Telkom LTE package currently available (100GB @ R999pm), that's high lol. With wireless internet, a modicum of restraint will be needed ;).
See LTE as an interim measure until fibre gets to you. A saying about having cake and eating it comes to mind! :D

That said, it's very possible that new LTE stations are being (or have been) built to serve that area, or that the uncapped LTE promotion might be extended to there.

He was using a Huawei LTE modem, like the B593, it has 2 antennas. He said using that modem i will get approx 10mb down.

Looks like i will have to just get the Telkom LTE package, atleast there will be proper internet at home, currently using the ipad as a hotspot, not ideal, with the urge of watching the odd Netflix episode now and then, becoming a bit costly :crying:

Most likely a B593, or possibly a B315 (which is almost identical, for this purpose).
The device has a pair of built-in antennas which are excellent, and also comes with a pair of flat whips which are not great and don't do much for the signal.
Not all of the Telkom "roving techies" are fully clued up on how to get the best from the B593/B315, especially if the test was not done from up on the roof and he looked only at the signal bars on the front panel.

That said, if you got even 1 signal bar (and 10Mbps) inside the house, your chances of getting good signal (and hence better connection performance) from the roof with an outdoor external antenna are instantly improved about tenfold.

Have a look here and at the following resources for on idea of what is possible with these devices :
(the emphasis often seems to be on "maximum speed" but "maximum signal" is actually the goal, same as it would be in your case)

I'd put money on you guys getting at least 10Mbps with a B593 indoors and out the box, and probably at least 25Mbps by investing a bit of time in an outdoor external antenna system.

Prepaid available, but m**r expensive compared to contract!
R1799/50GB or R3199/100GB, both valid for usage within 12 months.

Some of the current Telkom LTE contracts are very comparable to (arguably better/faster than) their FTTH counterparts, especially if latency is not that critical to you. Not too onerous to be "locked in" to one of those ...

Quick 2 questions.

Fiber to Mooikloof Ridge, looking at the letter that poedie posted, it looks like Fiber is only to about a quarter of the estate. does anyone know if the rest of the estate will get fiber.

Other question
Telkom LTE thier 50 and 100 gb packages says that can only be used on the Telkom 2300MHz LTE-A network, does anyone know if we get even the slightest coverage of that network. My Phone only receives Vodacom LTE. So was just wondering...

A telkom technician just left my place, he was fixing my ADSL.

He told me that the plan is to have the fibre lit up by April, but they are pushing for sooner and that once the fibre is lit copper lines to Mooikloof Ridge will be cut. They simply wont offer any copper services in MKR.

Yes I use the internal antennas. 2-3 bars

Speed test 14.96 Mps. But usually it's about 5-6 mps. We are very happy. But 100Gb p m not enough

I just got my telephone voice line order cancelled, due to no infrastructure, yet theres a little telkom box right outside the complex, I am really starting to hate mooikloof ridge estate.

And also very confused, what kind of planning is this, half the estate has infrastructure, and the other half are in the dark ages yet were built more recently.

What's strange though, is that my complex (country walk) is not listed on that map posted earlier. But there were guys in the complex that pulled up a bunch of bricks, I asked them what they were installing, and they said it was fibre.

Anyone know who we can contact to verify if their complex is on the list?

From what i hear, the best person to speak to is the Estate Manager, as he is in talks with Telkom regarding the infrastructure.

Just got home to find these two gentlemen working on the fibre, looks like they are splicing.
They are sitting outside my unit as I type this. Sadly since English is not their first language they were unable to provide me with information.

Good news for all Mooikloof ridge residents. I was at the estate managers office yesterday for something totally unrelated and over heard, who i assume is the estate manager and a colleague, talking about the fibre. I politely interrupted and asked why only certain complexes in mooikloof are getting fibre, he said that all of mooikloof ridge with have FTTH, the plans were changed and Telkom sent in extra people to assist with the rollout. So FTTH for all, well whoever wants it. And he said that Telkom gave him a timeline of a month to a month and a half, so in telkom time maybe 3 months.

They were bust in pebble sands yesterday, and this morning as i'm sure alot of guys might have saw, telkom are bust in Augrabies street. I stopped to chat to them and they said it will be on very soon, although that could mean anything.

My wife said she saw more Huawei techs yesterday in the estate.

Don't think anyone knows the progress per complex, as it looks like they are going from complex to complex, setting down the fibre as they go along.
